Happy Easter,

Our friends purchased some chicks from TS the same time we did and we have been baby sitting their chicks this week. Last night we heard a crying sound and noticed today this little one with what look like a tiny lower beak and possible a cyst. The chick can eat & drink, however, she seems like she is in some pain. Is this inhuman to keep her, or is it something that can be treated and she can live with? I want to have some info for our friends when they return tomorrow, thank you inadvance. I included a pic of a chick from the same batch for comparrison.

I have the same thing going on with my chick. I got them from a friend so I don't know exactly what breed it is but I think its a silkie. I just did another full inspection. It seems the lower beak hasn't grown. She want to live but is not able to eat well. The other chicks have grown more than her and she seems more lethargic as the days pass. I am afraid she will not make it.

Same here. Every day she seemed less and less energetic. She wasn't growing and actually started bleeding from her mouth. We think. There were no signs of any cuts or scrapes anywhere on her. We started a feeding tube Friday afternoon. We feed her a couple times a day, depending on how her crop feels. We bought some formula from Pet Smart called Exact and have been giving her that, baby applesauce and her own chick food blended with an egg. She is doing better now and even looks better. Her feathers are shiny and smooth. We bought a digital food scale at Wal-Mart yesterday for $15 so we can start weighing her. She was 7.5 ounces yesterday and 8 ounces this morning! It seems to be working. We just don't know what that thing is under her beak!
