Tragedy this morning! I went out to feed the birds and found one of my Delaware pullets upside down and dead in the 4" tube feeder. Apparently the feeder was empty or close to it and she was trying to reach down and got stuck. They are just 3 months old now and her body was just the size of the feeder. So sad. This is the tube feeder design on BYC using the "Y" fitting. If anybody else is using that style, beware, hazard for young birds if they get empty. Now I only have 4 pullets and one looks like it has the Columbian pattern.

That is terrible! Too lose a chick that way.
I have one Del. that is columbian pattern too. Shucks! I wanted her before because she developed quickly and was nice and broad. But the color is definitely all wrong at 15 wks.

Sorry about that . They are to valuable to lose if they are of breeding quality .
What kind of feeder is it ? Made from PVC pipe ?

Yes, PVC. I was going to post a link to the photo in the learning center, but I don't see it there anymore. I think she was one of the bigger and nicer ones, why couldn't it have been the one with the Columbian pattern?

The feeder is made with 4" PVC pipe, a "Y" fitting at the bottom, with another short piece of straight pipe in the bottom of the "Y" so as to be able to put a cap on the bottom. Then you fill the dead space at the bottom with sand. If you can visualize this. So she was stuck in the "Y".

That's awful. I'm so sorry. I can see this happening with the way they are around feed. I take the lid off the feed bin and they are inside it, on my back, on my arm.
Sounds like most of us are limited when it comes to pullets.

I have probably 3 with columbian markings. Does that make them Columbian Rocks?

I do not understand all the genetics, no matter how hard I try. Is it a common thing to get columbian markings from barred birds?

She went in the top ? 4" pipe. Buy a 4" cap and put on it.

Could you all post the pics of those with Columbian type markings vs. the Del SOP so that folks can learn and understand what to look for. I'm curious as to how much is "too much" when speaking of these color and marking differences. I'm not too up on these breeding rules.

No, No! There is a cap. She got stuck in the "Y" fitting at the bottom. I don't have a picture of one. The closest I could come so you know what I'm talking about is this photo behind the birds:


You can see the "Y" fitting sticking up.

Very pretty birds! That's a shame about the Del...they tend to be little greedy guts about food, that's for sure. Who would think one would climb up there and get stuck?

I had one of this bunch of birds to fall down a crack between hay bales and some lattice work when they were trying to get up on the hay bales where I feed the cat. Got stuck upside down there for who knows how long..none the worse for wear but it never did that again, I bet ya!
