Delawares from kathyinmo

I have a few really nice cockerels. The hens on the other hand all but one have pinched tails. Coloring nice but need to fix the tails. Will a good rooster help this?

Thanks for jumping in on this Jeff. It's a little well maybe a lot above my head.

The old Delaware Poultry Club Forum, not BYC Forum, sorry!
That forum doesn't seem to be there anymore.

You will get Delaware patterned offspring yes, they will more than likely be a little brassy esp. the males in the pyle zone(hackles, saddle, wingbow) area.
I wonder how difficult that would be to breed out? I have read that usually brassiness is very difficult to eliminate. Didn't the other Scott have to cross back to BR for a gene to get rid of it in his CR. So, there's a risk of creating a real mess.

I'm not experienced enough to know, but in theory I would guess it should help.

Hey there Kim yes it is very difficult to breed out for sure but you have to chose the lesser of the two evils I guess if you want to fix a type issue(which should be first always) or fix color color is always lower on the totem pole than type for sure.
I think the jury is still out on the outcross Scott did on his CRs. One just has to have lots of patience, time, space and MONEY to do this right is all LOL

I just need to fix these pinch tails come this breeding season. I'm really hoping the main breeding rooster I have will help in this.

One of my mentors on byc for my BCM says to breed to cock/cockeral that has a very bushy tail. I have done this and it is opening the tails in my female marans. The challenge is finding the male with the bushy tail! I got lucky and found one at a show and was able to talk the gal into selling him to me. It took a chunk of change but was well worth it :)

I have read that the old timers would make this cross to improve their Dels. A year ago I bought some GNH with the plan to play with this with my own Del. line. The GNH chicks I got came from hens with lovely open tails which I wanted to improve in my Dels. I really fell for these birds and never made the cross. Anyways, I have the ability this season to play with this but maybe not the time or breeding pens depending on what happens.............. Would also like some input on what the results might be.

Does GNH stand for German New Hampshires or something else? This is some interesting information and I've been wondering about crossing my current Delaware line with New Hampshires.

And if it is German New Hampshires, why specifically that line and not other New Hampshire? I don't know much about that breed.

Yes, German New Hampshires :) I would think a cross with any New Hampshire female with the type and growth you were wanting would work. I just happened to end up with the GNH.
