Delawares from kathyinmo

That is easier here in the winter time. Unless you have been in southern Arizona in the summer, it is hard to imagine how brutal it is. And as I get older, my body tolerates the heat less and less. A break from the heat is necessary and a change of scenery for a mental refreshment.

I can't imagine imagine it. I lived in Boston/NYC for a bit, & Nice, France ... in all three places, the city heat + humidity was too much for me. Towards the end, I couldn't stay conscious in the summer ... I just faint. I also "lived" for a bit in Egypt. Hot & Dry is way better than hot + humid. I can stay conscious as long as I have water. I wasn't used to either being from Oregon where summers are dry and things tend to cool down a lot at night. Honestly, I don't deal with heat well.

Out of 20 - 30 young F'5 pullets from this years hatches starting in March I don't think I have one with a correctly coloured tail. All have barred tails. Three cockerals used were all overcoloured and all four pullets used had no barring in the tails. Any thoughts? What are the rest of you seeing? If I deem these all culls, how to move forward???

We all need help from someone who knows what they are doing.
Most of my pullets' tails are ok. Some are almost close to correct. I'm having other problems. WINGS - almost all look split or the feathers are just not right. The pullets are looking a little better but almost all the males' wings are a mess. I'll post the pullets here, so you can see the tail color and the males on the other thread.

B22-17 wks barred tail

P13- 18 wks gray undercolor

Orange- 11 weeks

Tail in the back is almost perfect

Some of your pullets look pretty good! Wow, the wing issues though, some of those cockerals definitely look split to me. Are they too young to make that determination yet? My oldest are a little younger than yours and I don't have a wing in the bunch that looks like those. Not in my other two breeds either.

I keep telling myself I only need one Cockeral or one Pullet better than the parents to move forward. I may have some improved Cockerals over their Dads so they can get bred back to Mom/Aunts when the time comes. If all the pullets end up having the barred tails, I just won't use them. Their Moms have good type and decent colour so no reason to unless someone helpfull can give me one. Am certainly not against doing some test breeding/experimenting. Also have some lovely New Hampshire Hens and Pullets that I could play with..........

I don't know.

I feel like the chicken gremlins are throwing every recessive defect/dq that they can find at me!!! Go ahead, she's a Dorking breeder, she can take it!

I think you should do a couple side experiments, one with the barred tails (if there are none with correct tails) and one where you cross back to the NH. I'm very curious about that one. Although there is a hatchery that sells a Del x NH and they have orange/red bleeding through in spots.

Yeah, I know about those Gremlins too. Breeding my Black Copper Marans Cock back to his four daughters this year produced 25 % white chicks. Now I am working to breed out the recessive white gene!

My New Hampshires, Solid type/colour Cock bred to four solid type/colour unrelated hens and out of over 30 cockerals none have a correctly coloured tail, all have tailfeathers bordered like the females should be. The males main tail feathers should be solid black.

The hatchery that is selling the cross, do you know if they are using a Del Cock over NH hens or the other way around? NH Cock over Del. Hens would produce sexlinks, all boys would be white and the girls would be red at hatch.

Something doesn't look quite right in the Delaware coop. Can you help me put my finger on it? :lau

So instead of 10 more Delaware chicks, I have maybe half DelaMutts.

That shows me how good I am at figuring out who lays what egg. Glad I stopped setting clutches. :D
