Delawares from kathyinmo

The wing back problem seems to be some skeletal problem that is hereditary. You have to eliminate that. The yellow on the feathers is from the sun, but it is also a predisposition to get yellow. You should only see that in males.

Walt
Yes Walt I noticed the hens don't seem to have the color yellowing problem -
So on the wing just keep selecting forward and hopefully we can eliminate it?
Maybe I should go with the cockerel with no wing problem- his shape is good but lacks the size of the larger ones.
Thanks for the input

If you have the space try a breeding with the small male. He may be carrying "big" genes. Yes, deselect the ones with sing problems.

None of them sing yet but if they do I could form a quartette and really make some money on chickens LOL
Just kidding Walt I know what you meant and appreciate the advice - The small cockerel was my thoughts also.

Edit to add - No I don't have the space for more than two Cocks but I can make room for the small one since I know the F4 cock is throwing the REX wing

Here is my young Delobster from his better side. I'll be doing an after-dark photo shoot soon, looking for evidence of this type of thing on other birds.

Do you think I could train them to all line up and do this for me?

Is this pullet's wing okay? There is that little gap ... ? (I edited this line for clarity ... this is a pullet ... a different bird from the one in the top photo with the super funky wings ... can you see this wing well enough to tell if it's okay?)

Here is a link to another article about breeding for type, with some cool illustrations gathered from some cool places ... http://scratchcradle.wordpress.com/2012/09/09/gms11-breeding-for-type/

Wow ! if you can get em to line up like that and fan dance and sing you will be in the big money .
I don't think the good side is much better - I don't think I would carry those genes forward - but he will be tasty

Agreed! I did't say "good," I just said, "better." (I'd laugh, but I feel bad for the bird.) Poor guy looks like a lobster. De-lobster.

He is the only one of the more mature chicks I'm seeing this on when I look from the distance they're comfortable with. But now I'm fascinated/curious about if any other birds show any trace of this kind of thing so will have to pick them off the roosts for inspections.

I'm hoping I have one cockerel to breed. If not, Daddy gets to do all the work again next year. Le sigh.

I'm starting to think about my finishing diet for these guys once I get them in the cockerel pen. I'm thinking some kind of milk powder supplement for their feed ... like for finishing veal.

Here is Dad putting the chicken wire on a cattle panel for my modular cockerel cage idea ...

This is REX in his young days - the wing flip - was tasty at 33 weeks

Leslie - you got a good Dad there - keep him happy
I finish my Cockerels with a 18% pellet and add Calf mana pro [TSC] [ about one heaping table spoons-per two birds-seems to do the job

Awwww. Poor REX! No doubt about those wings. Dad loves "the babies," as he calls the birds in the Delaware cage. He doesn't let other people feed them. It's pretty cute. He had promised himself there would be no animals on the farm when he was finally in charge, so it took him a while to warm up to the birds.
