Delicate Question on Horseback Riding

Quote:
He isn't 'very heavy'! He's 250lbs for heaven's sake.

I think Wels was speaking in general, not hinting anything directly to the OP. Sometimes threads that run a few pages long can wander around the general topic. No insult intended 99.9% of the time.

Such complicated questions huh?

I agree 250 lbs is not heavy but I'm gettin there! The vague questions by the OP did not indicate what breeds he is wanting. It is very generalized questions that opens for more viewpoints. Like we are doing, going off the track.

I think alot of people gave good advice. I am 6'0'' about 260ish lbs. I purchased a 18 yo ranch horse about 2 months ago...was a lil underweight but is getting back to weight. He has a VERY big butt and is very muscular now. He is 16h ranch bred gelding. He is in much better shape now that I have gotten him and rode him several times a week. I wouldnt worry so much about your weight but the horse. Some people would complain that I shouldnt ride my horse as he is a lil sway back (but he is also 18 years old). This is a horse that has no problem cutting but loves to just go out and enjoy a nice walk. Havent pushed him into a run but I dont see the point of running him right now as he is just getting back into shape and will be given to my 7yo in about 4 months so she can run barrels and poles on him. By that time he will be even more muscular and will be able to do a very nice run for my daughter.

Thank you, everyone for your replys. As a kid I always wanted a pony, my parents just didn't have the money. Now I have the land and money, but not sure if one would be right for me. I have been doing research before making such a big commitment. About a month ago I posted the question, what is better for a beginner a pony, mini, or donkey. Several people here suggested riding lessons, to get a basic knowledge of horses. That suggestion made a lot of sense to me. But because of my size I was worried about the horse. I always thought of horses as strong powerful animals, but after reading some posts sounds like they can be delicate to.

I'm a big woman-used to be rather heavy but now I'm just really tall. For me, it's more of an issue of how incredibly stupid I look on a 14 hander regardless of what the horse weighs or how it's built. I LOVE a draft for riding. They have such great temperments and you really don't have to worry very often about them taking off on you. My new horse is a 16 hand QH gelding.

If you're planning on taking lessons before buying, then it would be good to ask the trainers and teachers at the stables you will be learning at. Most trainers have a lot of experience matching up riders with horses and could tell you exactly what kind of horse you should get and why. One local riding stable that I know of have huge thoroughbreds, so your weight and height would not be a problem there if you wanted to take lessons.
