Welcome from North Carolina!

Hooray! I finally found the batteries! Now I will show you some pictures of my sweet little chicks!

Belle [Speckled Sussex]

Named by my lovely fiance, this is the smartest of our girls. first to climb a perch, first to grow feathers, first to attempt flight, and least fussy about being picked up. Honestly, I'm sold on this breed being wonderful backyard chickens... She hasn't done anything to cause us trouble, and even effortlessly shook off getting splashed with some water when my cat jumped on my back while I was changing their water.

Liz'bitt [Jersey Giant]

Liz'bitt is named after a person on the show "Swamp People". I was inspired to name this girly Liz'bitt because they both are tough ladies. Liz'bitt has been a bit of a handful, and loudly complains when things dont go her way. She didnt want to lay still for this picture, but a tap on the beak reminded her who the top bird-brain was, and she calmed down for her picture!

Eden [Silver-Laced Wyandotte]

Poor little Eden has had a lot of troubles, but has survived to feather-growing age smartly, and despite her original disconnect with the other ladies, she has since warmed up to the flock. She is very quiet, and of course, I named her Eden because she started developing a day behind the others, leading to a younger appearance.

Cookie [Barred Rock]

Cookie is a loud girl who serves as my alarm when the food is low, or when the water gets too many pine shavings in it. She seems to be the most danger-sensitive of the group, and watches the dog and cat with an intense vigor. She likes to stay perched at the highest point in the brooder(a cleaned-up stump I put there for them to climb on before they had the dexterity to perch on smaller objects)

Poppy [Buff Orpington]

If belle had any competition for sweetest, it would be poppy. Poppy is so docile and unafraid of anything its a tad concerning... A chicken this peaceful might try and invite a hawk over to the feeder for a bite instead of hiding under the tree or picnic table. She's hardly produced a single plaintive peep this whole week... What a chill bird!

Nessa [Barred Rock]

Even though Nessy didn't try flying before Belle, she's definitely mastering it far better than the sussex. This little chick may only be a week old, but she can jump from the carpet up onto a twin-size bed like its a casual activity. Pretty impressive. She can be a handful like Liz'bitt, but the ol' beak tap always works like a charm!

And that's my ladies! Pics of them with me once I trust them all out at once with the cat out(Once they're so big he wont be able to pick one off quietly.) He's been super nice to them so far and is extremely well-trained for a cat... He even alerted me when our little Yorkie-poodle was being attacked by crows in the backyard(She's only 5 pounds despite being fully grown). Though, even with his exceptional temperament and discipline, I'm sure a whole mess of little birds running around on the couch there's bound to be a time when one is beyond my field of attention... and as with all cats, I'm sure such an opportunity would be too risky of a test for old Mufasa. Even with him declawed.

I am blessed with such good-tempered animals, who always seem to respond well to training.
