Hello friends!
I just found this rubber egg in the nest box and I’ve never seen anything like it. I have a flock of 8, and two are bantams, so it’s one of the big girls. No rooster. They are 3 and 4 years old. Good layers, but have slowed recently due to the temperature drops and molting. No one is giving any signs of concern. They forage daily, have calcium supplements, and get happy chicken treats on the regular. There was some frank blood (small amount) in the nest box when I picked it up, and the picture doesn’t do it full justice. The red/purple area was about 1/3 of the egg and the horned protrusion was leaking more blood. Any experience would be most welcomed!

Can you cut it open?

I'd be inclined to give this hen 1 tablet Calcium Citrate with D3 once daily for a few days to help her expel anything else like more membrane and/or egg material.

I'd have to say it's likely an intact follicle that has been incorporated in a shell, but hard to say without seeing the contents of the egg.

Thank you so much for the prompt replies! I was able to cut the egg open. The yolk is very large, and the bloody portion was very contained. There was a small, very firm round sphere at the end with the protrusion. I have more photos if need be, but wanted to spare those folks who may not want to see them. Please advise if these are sufficient.

The bloody portion is an intact Follicle which likely was dropped along with Ovum (Yolk). This was incorporated into the shell.

I would make sure to get that extra Calcium into her as I mentioned before. See that she's eating a nutritionally balanced feed and has Oyster shell free choice.
