Denagard?? Is this good.

I was wondering if anyone can tell me, Is Denagard a good item to have on hand? And wondering if anyone has used it and if the product worked at all. Thanks for any information.

I have a bottle that I bought when my flock had a terrible respiratory infection. After lots of research I was able to determine that it was the best treatment for mycoplasma gallisepticum(MG). It is somewhat new here in the States, but has been used a great deal in the UK with great results. MG is supposed to be a VERY common infection in backyard poultry and some experts estimate that approximately up to 75% of backyard flocks have it. It passes from the hen to the chick through the egg. It doesn't usually kill the birds and produces mild cold like symptoms, but it does drop egg production and your birds may just not seem to be super healthy. There are some folks who have decided to give it as a preventative for this infection. I bought it thinking the test results from the Virginia state necropsy on my birds would for sure show they had MG and ONE other infection, but results showed there was no MG. Sooo, here I am with my bottle of Denagard and haven't done anything with it. I would love to hear also if anyone has used it here on BYC and what they thought about it.

Hey chickengrl, I would love to hear what other BYCers have to say about. I posted on another thread about runny noses. To make a long story short you mention Tylan 50. How would you compare Denagard to Tylan 50? I am just starting to read about both.

Tylan is a very good drug for respiratory stuff, but even it won't treat them all. Some are viruses for instance. A Virus doesn't give 2 hoots about antibiotics. The absolute best medication is actually Baytril, but it takes a vets presciption and most vets won't see a chicken OR give you the medication. The way I understand Denagard is that it treats just MG and nothing else. Hopefully someone will chime in if that's not correct. The other problem is that most of us have to treat rather blindly because we don't have the tests available/done so that we know what is the diagnosis. Anyway, I hope some of the above is helpful.

In my flock, Denagard is the treatment of choice for any respiratory infection. It can also be used as a preventative without fear of producing resistance. You treat the birds water once a month for a week.

Warning: it makes the water VERY bitter. I always add some karo syrup when I treat with Denagard and they drink it right up.

So I got some Denagard, and put it in the water. I have 3 waterers and I put karo syrup in 2 of them. Even if the water is bitter I don't think my chickens mind it as I give them ACV. They all flocked to the waterers and it has not even been 24hrs and I have noticed a BIG difference in the chickens. I am so happy I went this route.
