Denagard, Tylan and MG update

@JackieTN

Just thought I'd let you know...
Although I worked out 2ml denegard per 2 litres water(based on 25mg of active substance per kg per day which is equivalent to 100 ml of product per 500 kg bodyweight per day) I have just come across these instructions which give double this amount. https://www.viovet.co.uk/Denagard_tiamulin/c6571/
As I've been giving them the denegard at 2ml per 2 litres for two and half days and there is hardly any improvement I am upping the dose to the amount given by viovet.co.uk. which states 2ml per 1 litre.
hopefully now we'll knock that mycoplasma out!
I've heard if the chickens don't drink it because of the strong taste you can add either sugar or pure juice to the water.

Thanks again! I'm starting with the Denagard tomortow and I've also read about adding pancake syrup, sugar or honey.
I'll let you know about my results.

I've also had great luck with denegard as a preventive. A couple of things I want to add;
I use this dose- 16ml to gallon for active runny noses for 5 days.
8ml to gallon for preventative.
My chickens don't drink as much when the denegard is in their water so I use some of the treated water to make them a mash with their food. That way I know they are all getting some.
I brought in a new rooster resently and after a week he started with the runny nose so I gave them all denegard for 5 days and his runny nose went right away and he didn't get any other symptoms.

Also an experiment I want to try is next spring letting any broody hens hatch some chicks and see if they are dosed monthly if they will ever show symptoms.

I gave my two australorps with CRD 2ml denegard per litre of water, and mixed it with their feed each day. They have not improved - in fact one died. I took the surviving one to a specially aviary vet, who did just one test for parasites, - negative.
She couldn't do a test for mycoplasma gall. because you need mucus, or liquid bubbling from the eyes and my chicken doesn't have any of that. The vet has given me a different antibiotic, enrofloxacine, and told me it would shift it within a couple of days, but it's been 4 days now and my australorp still has all the symptoms and is not improving. The vet checked her lungs - all clear - so the infection is in her head/sinuses.
So far we have tried a course of tylan which cleared her rattling breathing, an extended course of denegard with no improvement in symptoms - still sneezing, now she is three days into a 6 day course of enrofloxacine, no improvement, and she is also taking meloxicam as an anti inflammatory.

The only thing I can think of (I am not a vet) is that this is NOT a bacterial infection.

After doing research I've discovered there is a fungal infection that causes the same symptoms as CRD. - aspergillose. Has anyone any experience with treating this?

I'm sorry the denegard didn't work for your hens. I don't have any experience with aspergillosis, just a little that I have read online. I believe the treatment was oxine given as a mist. You may be right, that could be what you are dealing with. It would be worth trying the oxine, it couldn't hurt either way.
I hope you are able to get your hen feeling better soon!

I wanted to post an update since it has been around 6 months since I had the worst summer ever due unfortunately being acquainted with MG. I know that this is a controversial topic since many people believe having a closed MG flock is unacceptable and irresponsible, however, I chose not to cull my birds and to take some advice from a few people on BYC. Fortunately I have some good news and possibly hope for those affected with this terrible disease, especially those who have so many dear pets they love.

For 6 months I have been using a 1% solution of Denagard added to the drinking water for 2 days, every 4 weeks. And I haven't had a single gurgle, cough or suspicious mucous sneeze (although I still wait in horrible anticipation just to make sure, almost every night). Denegard did nothing to treat sick birds at the time. As soon as a bird showed symptoms this summer I would isolate immediately and inject Tylan 200 given at 0.2 ml subcutaneous near fold of wing or leg and breast(standard sized hen) 2x a day for 1 or 2 days seemed to knockout symptoms. However once I started monthly Denagard I haven't had a thing. I DO live in southern Canada so winter is probably to my advantage with this but I have hope this can continue and work for those affected.

Just wanted to share an update and provide some direction for those who have had the misfortune of dealing with MG as well.
So it's been a year and a half since this post...has your flock been well?
