Denied by local humane society:(

I had a very similar experience in Columbus Ohio Humane Society when I went to adopt a kitten over 13 years ago (so that should tell you how long and difficult it is and has been working with the humane society) anyway long story short.. for no good reason they denied me the kitten because I lived in an apartment (even though cats were allowed) The shelter was busting at the seams with cats and kittens (as most shelters/humane societies are) and well I was crushed.. instead it almost seemed as if they advocated more for euthanizing animals instead of placing in loving and caring homes.. I will actually never forget that day.. he was a beautiful long haired grey kitten who I hope found a good home.. My alternative plan that day was on a whim stopping by a local pet store on my way back home to pick up goldfish food I belive and this pet store was infamous for puppy mill puppies and right inside the door was a large cage of grey and white kittens who I new by looking at them should not have been there.. their eyes were just barely open and they literally were not much bigger than a large hamster! Feeling I needed to rescue these darlings I "purchased" a female grey and white kitten on my Visa!! They were so young and fragile she barely had teeth that had broken through.. needless to say I had to get supplements and got her to a cat specialist vet within a few days who was shocked at the age.. amazingly the kitten thrived however she has always remained very petite.. and now over 13 years later she is still very spunky and happy in my home. I guess in some ways it was a blessing that the Humane Society denied me because Violet came into my life that very same and sad day.

If you do a "Search" on here for "Human Society" or even me as an Author you should find more discussion about the organization. I just want to add here that folks need to remember that the organization is the largest Animal-Rights, Anti-Hunting, and Anti-trapping activist organization in the world.

They give more money to anti-hunting, anti-trapping, and animal-rights causes than anyone else. They were also the ones who brought criminal charges against a homeowner in AZ several years ago for taking a baseball bat to a rat in his garage. Behind their policies is a basic fundamental philosophy that animals are entitled to all the same basic rights and privileges that you as a human are.

So when you support them in any way, including paying to get animals from them, you may be doing more harm to the very animals you care for than you are doing good for them.

God Bless,

Absolutely. My German Shorthair and first Bloodhound both came from the pound. He cost $15, they actually paid me to take the Bloodhound ($40 adoption fee, with $45 refunded when they had proof of her being spayed!). My husband always said I should have learnt something from that! I have a rescue mutt, who is a wonderful dog, that came from the Humane Society. She was $85 which included a $50 credit towards her spay, I picked her up from the vet and paid the balance. With shots and all she was probably a $250+ mix! Their adoption fees for already neutered dogs are extremely reasonable at $35.

I wouldn't trade her for the world, and i've seen more outrageous shelter prices. The vet charged me $100+ for the spay, and $80+ every time she needed booster shots, as most do with any member of the public, but you can bet they don't charge the shelters that much. Reasonable adoption fees to cover costs are one thing (e.g. $100-150), or possibly more with special needs pets, but to ask $300+ for a rescue dog is basically sentencing many homeless dogs to death.

I won't go as so far to say I hate the Humane Society because I recognize their noble purpose, but I think that once they are run by, for the lack of a better term "animal lovers", they no longer serve their intended purpose and achieve quite the opposite results. I find keeping unadoptable animals alive in cages indefinitely and turning away newly abandoned "adoptable" animals reprehensible.

I really don't want to go into too much personal detail and get this thread closed, but I will say that there needs to be a changeover in who runs many of these facilities before I'd ever dream of supporting them again.

I wonder if they checked out the president when he wanted a dog.Our county has a phone number listed for Humane Society, but since we don't have any money for one, people just take them out in the woods and drop them off, and unfortunately it seems that my house is the one they chose. We have always gotten our dogs from the HS but lately I think I could adopt a child from some foreign country before I could get a dog from any county round here.

My favorite animal "Sanctuary" adoption story:
I wanted to buy rescue hens.
I was told I should buy what they had - all 11 roosters and one hen. $15 a piece. That poor hen. The woman talking to me didn't have a clue why that would be a bad idea.

Is there a rescue or no kill shelter independently owned near you? My dog came from the SPCA but I had to take her to the vet the next day and was told she had bronchitis and she was covered in fleas, allergic so she had spots of missing hair I hadnt noticed when I got her. Their kennels were damp and cold. We were told we had to get her fixed within 30 days. At the vet we noticed she had a scar which we couldnt tell if it was from a c section or if she was already fixed. Called them and they didnt know, they didnt bother getting much info from the guy because Beagles usually dont get adopted

so they put in a call to the guy who brought her in to ask him. They never called me back. I would get another from there if I found the dog Im still looking for but I would be weary and know what to look for. I was turned down by a rescue once, never told why. Try www.petfinder. com and ask around, I hope you find one.

It is a dog and it shouldn't be easier to adopt a human child than it is to adopt a dog.

Don't get me wrong, I don't believe in animals being abused, but I think the problem with the humane society or these rescue groups is they forget that animals are animals and should be treated as such.

That being said, we just got a great dog FREE from the guy we purchased our Embden Geese from. He had already trained her to work with livestock, she's housebroke, and listens very well!

I would have to say the very BEST dogs we've ever had are the free ones.

Amen and amen, Quail, you nailed it!

In our local publications they are constantly begging for people to adopt pets, jars sitting by cash registers pleading for the money to care for animals in the shelters.....but constant refusals to give the pets a good home.

And, yet, they will give numerous pets to my sister, the animal collector, who cannot provide adequate shelter and care for the animals that she has. Because she is a constant feature at the shelters....I can't imagine they have ever checked her premises!

I fail to understand the mentality but I feel it has something to do with grants from the state.....the more need that can be shown by overflowing shelters, the more money made available in the grants.

And I agree with the whole power trip theory...I've seen that quite a bit in our local shelters. They won't let you take a cat home and keep it outside. Yet, they can justify keeping it at the shelter in a small cage for months on end? I would rather give a cat a good, loving outside home for however long they may live it, then cage them for months with no individual attention and no hopes of breathing fresh air or lying in a sunny spot on the porch.

Our local shelter cannot take anymore cats, they are filled to the brim! I called to ask about getting a companion kitten for our outside neutered tom and they said they couldn't give one to anyone who won't keep them inside as they live longer inside! Crazy people!!!

That is the heart of the matter. The humane society has repeatedly supported anti animal ownership of any kind. Some factions really would rather put down an animal rather than adopt them out. Now it should be said that there is a big difference between the SPCA in one town and another. There are a lot of good people that work for the SPCA and I'm not slamming the people that work very hard at finding a solution to a horrible problem. But national management is fair game as far as I'm concerned. It's a tough call, work with a group who is frequently diametrically opposed to keeping animals, or support puppy mills (yes, I know that is extreme, and it often falls between the two, but...). To give you an idea of how bad it can get, take the polar bear cub(s?) born at I think it was the Berlin Zoo a couple of years ago. After the initial media blitz, they were almost forced put the cubs down because "they could never live a natural life". Honest, hand on my heart, I'm not kidding. The public backlash was so pronounced the cubs where spared, and are doing well last I heard.

I would write a letter to the editor and CC it to the city/county council, the local Humane Society that gave you the problems, and the national Humane society. I would express the problems you had. Then explain that because the organization is apparently not meeting the needs of the people that fund them, you will no longer send financial support directly nor can support local government officials that allow a publicly funded (at least partially in most cities I expect) organization to treat qualified animal owners this way. Heck send it to the cable media. Another group I would send it to is the governing board for Veterinarians, and ask if they should support groups such as this, after all your vet just lost a bunch of business.

It really is a shame that organizations like this seem to go off the deep end sometimes. While I certainly agree that potential adopters need to be "checked out" so abusive and cruel people don't get hold of these animals that have been traumatized enough, there needs to be some practicality and reason involved here.
