Denied by local humane society:(

most of dogs came from hiways and parkling lots. my puppy. my daughter found running thru traffic at the putt-putt while she was eating at steak-out. She brought it to me because she already had 2, well they made me have five. But we lost our River friday(panceratic cancer he was 13) and we buried him today. He will be greatly missed. Very sad weekend

Did the person look like this?

I'm sorry, but a person that damaged belongs in a ward, hooked to some voltage! I laughed out loud on that one! Where do they find those people????

I've lived a long time on this old rock but I've never heard of a possum sodomizing a cat.....and I live in WV!!! If its anything involving possums, its bound to happen here!

Ok, heres my 2 cents for whatever it might be worth..

My first dog ever came from the humane society..(My dad told me he was "allergic to dogs" even tho I found out later he had had one growing up
sad.png

Tara was such a sweetie..She was a bit neurotic, but hey..I was back then too
wink.png

When I got her from the humane society..She had kennel cough and skin problems..
Regular visits to the vet helped..

She taught me a lot about dogs..And because of her I found out I was a "dog person"
big_smile.png

She passed on a couple years back during the dog food recalls..

Just before she passed on (at 15 years of age) Sheila and Mac came into my life..

Sheila is the cream colored dog in my avatar..
She is an escape artist and devious as can be..When she came to me, I was in my back yard (hobbling around on a cane from a bad car accident) picking up trash..She was nipping at my trash bag and I could see she had recently had pups..

Mac is one of her pups..(he is the spotted dog in my avatar)

We didn't have a fence then..And because she was so good at escaping..We got her fixed as soon as possible..

Mac..I never did get fixed..
He is the sweetest gentlest dog I have ever known..
And smart too..If I wasn't so attached to him..He would be a good candidate for being a service dog..

They sleep in my room at night..And we now have a fence that is 6 foot high/privacy panels..Saved for almost a year! Cost $1400 but worth every penny..I love watching them play
big_smile.png

These 2 dogs have totally changed my life!
I dealt with major depression most of my life..
I no longer have those feelings..
I wake up every morning with a smile and laughing because of them..
I am so truely blessed!!!!!!

I hear that Sheila used to live on the corner up the road..When they moved out..They left her here..Her name back then was Zena..Dunno if that was just what the neighborhood kids called her or what..

When she came to me..There is no way I could have afforded to adopt her from a shelter..We had no fence at the time, so I probably wouldn't have qualified anyways..

Since then however..I have given up whatever it takes to make sure she and Mac have what they need..

I even had a broken leg that I didn't see a doc about (hey it wasn't my -first- broken bone..lol!)
But they get regular checkups, flea meds, quality kibble, beef bones/rawhide for their teeth and heartworm preventative..

Sheila is a chicken killer..Some folks have said I should put her down..But I just do my best to make sure she never gets loose..
At least it was -my- chickens she got ahold of and not the neighbors
hmm.png

Mac is learning to "protect the babies"
I will probably never leave him alone with chickens..But when I am with him..He minds and knows better..

Ok, this has ended up a lot longer than I planned..
Just my own personal experience

Hi, hi. Thought I'd throw in what I have experienced.
We also tried to adopt a elkhound mix pup many years ago and we were rejected. We had 2 other dogs a fenced yard I even had a pen with toys and a blanket all set up, we even told them they could come to our house and check everything out. They totally made it sound like it was highly likely we would get him. 2 weeks later after WE called them, they told us they found a "better" home!! It's insane.
A close friend of mine who is a very caring and works very hard to have the very best for her animals was rejected from getting a 4 year old basset from the SPCA! They specifically chose to adopt to save a dogs life, and for some reason the were not "worthy".
If anyone wants to know why no one wants to adopt it's beacause:
a. The SPCA can charge as much for a mixed breed of unknown origin and raising as a purebred puppy.
b.When people DO want to adopt a pet and agree to the fees and dangers, they are rejected!
Now im not saying all doptable pets are dangerous or unsafe, but you can never know based on their upbringing.
I find it highly disapointing that they have gotten greedy and out of hand on how they control people adopting pets.
Everyone talks about overpopulation of pets and "stop breeding" and all that sillness, but don't they recognize they are doing by being so unnesessarily picky?
It's just like anything else if they are given the power eventually they will let it go to their heads and will be corrupt.

My two cents. I hope i didn't offend anyone, just my experinces.
To the op, go get yourself a cute pup that u can raise around all your animals and know its safe for you.
Good luck

Yeah nothing but bad experiences with these types of groups. It is much less trouble and expensive to just avoid them. Many parts of this area are not well off economically and trying to squeeze 300.00 for a pet right off isn't going to happen. I would rather they spend the cash on vets and food.

Which goes in to my 2nd rant:
Why all the vet visits? When I was about 15 I could buy all the shots for my dogs/cats from the feed store for around 2.00 each including rabies. If my dog had worms they had a pill for .50. Now it is required I take the pets to the vet for standard things I could do at home if it were legal. I understand if the pet is extremely ill but, standard stuff I could do. Heck I gave my grandmother her insulin shot from age 12-25 because she was afraid of needles. If I was capable of sticking a needle into an old woman it shouldn't be harder to do that to a cat.

they DO give their own shots, and they charge like they don't. It is legal in California to give your own shots, except for rabies. You can give rabies shots, but you can't get a rabies cert for it, which you need to license your dog.

What a bunch of bull! It should be "first come, first served". We're talking about saving thousands of thousands of dogs from being "put to sleep" every year, and supposed "caring employees" want to put potential adoptees on a WAITING LIST... @#$%^&*&^^

As with most everything, there are good rescue groups and bad ones. We foster cats for a local no-kill shelter. These cats were drop-offs, or strays (ferals in some cases), or came from the pound. There are some rules involved: all cats get fixed before they're adopted out, most cats won't be adopted out if they're to live outside (though some of the more feral ones are adopted out as barn cats), and no declawing. The lady who runs the shelter very obviously loves cats (there are about 70 living in her house), but she's not like some of the wackjobs others have talked about on the thread. If you adopt from her, you can return the cat for any reason, no questions asked, for the rest of its life. I think it's a good shelter, with sensible rules.

Now for the other side of the coin.

When we were looking for guardians for our chickens a few months ago, I tried rescue groups, looking for Great Pyrs. Except for one group, all the rescues refused to adopt out dogs to a farm for working --- we're talking about dogs that were bred for hundreds of years to be working dogs. The groups wanted their adoptees to go to fenced backyards only or preferably indoors, because they thought a working dog would be ignored.

They knew nothing at all about the breed, apparently.

The one rescue that understood the concept of "working dogs" and had a pair of Pyrs wanted $250 per dog, plus $300 to treat the heartworm-positive female. We ended up picking up a classifieds newspaper and finding a pair of 5-month-old pups about an hour away, for $50 each.
