A couple weeks ago I went to mcdonalds and saw some kids messing with a rooster, they came up to me and asked me if i wanted it, I wouldve said no but i heard girls in the background talking about how those boys were kicking it and the poor thing looked terrified so i took him in, we have hens in our back lot but I didnt want him to mate with them so I put him in our backyard. He seemed completely fine and for the first 2 weeks he seemed happy and energetic, as well as him crowing about 83,792,146 times a day. He's even pretty friendly and tends to follow me around the yard and hasnt attacked me. But the last couple of days he just has been laying in the corner of the kennel where he likes to sleep and hasnt crowed once. Usually hed go to the fence cuz the hens coop is right on the other side, but now he doesnt seem to care. He still roams the yard and eats but he seems to have no energy and keeps his head close to his body. Idk whats going on but id hate to see the poor thing die. Any ideas?

What do his droppings look like? Normal or not?
Is his crop functioning normally? Should fill and empty as he eats and digests throughout the day. Feel his crop first thing in the morning before he's had food or water to see if it's empty. If it's not empty first thing that could indicate a problem. Does he have access to poultry grit?
Check him over for any signs of lice/mites. Pictures here for help identifying:

Also look for any injuries hiding in feathers.
Any symptoms of a respiratory problem? Wheezing, coughing, sneezing, discharge from eyes, nares or beak?

He passed the night before last, he didnt have mites and his droppings looked pretty normal and he even gained a little more energy towards the end of the day, but i went out there yesterday morning and he was dead :/ Im wondering if maybe he had internal damage from the kids kicking him?

Thank you for taking him in. I'm sorry you lost him.

Kids kicking animals to death. Makes me cry. Thank you again for not letting that happen.
