Can being taken away from the rest of the brood send a chick in to a downward spiral ? Gave a chick to a friend and she told me that it was fine one moment and then was barely chirping the next.. any idea what it might be? she wasn't sure if it would live through the night.

I'm very sorry the chick didn't make it. It's hard to say what happened. Moving can be stressful for them, and there could have been an underlying problem or weakness that was aggravated by stress. Not knowing exactly what happened during and after the move, it's really hard to say.

Thank you, I am not sure either, my friend told me she had her settled in and warm, next thing she knew she was having issues and had a very weak chirp..

I just wanted to add, that if it was a single chick, then I'd recommend next time (if there is a next time) that there be more than one. They are flock animals and tend to do much better when they are not alone. Being alone can cause a lot of stress in and of itself, they just tend to do so much better with others of their own kind around them. That may have not had anything to do with what happened, but it's something to keep in mind.
Again, I'm very sorry it didn't make it.

Thank you, I lost one myself who was in with the rest of them, I think I know what might have happened, "The Post Office" the chicks were shipped in, arrived at the post office and they never called Tractor Supply, they didn't get dropped off till 3 in the afternoon, I'm going to guess that the poor babies sat there for a good 8 hours. When I went to town this AM I checked on everyone, they were all running around chirping and making a mess, I came home and one was dead, no signs of harm. I can understand one, as shipping is rough, but not 2, that tells me something wasn't right. Tractor Supply replaced them and told me what had happened, Lady said that they'd lost over half of that shipment because of it. So everyone is in clean bedding and drinking electrolytes and vitamins.
