Derperella, the (weird) Faverolles, & Friends

My husband would have a fit if I brought a chicken in the house. He already thinks I'm nuts. Wish I had running warm water at the barn. It would also help if it was warmer outside.

Artsyrobin, Do you mean bubbles, as in soap? What Kind is safe for chx? my two bossy "bar codes" (thank you Nambroth,) could use an attitude adjustment!
i have used dawn, or baby shampoo- i think what it is is that they get so relaxed, not sure if the bar codes would appreciate it at first, but once they start relaxing be careful cuz they will slide right into the water! you can also use flea shampoo

If you use dawn, it is best to use normal "blue" dawn without antibacterial properties if you need to bathe a bird... but be aware that it will strip their natural oils that they use to coat their feathers, so keep an eye on the weather. Cold & wet weather after a dawn bath could mean cold, wet chicken. Try not to work it in near their preen gland too much. This is the little bump that looks like it has a wick sticking out of it, near the base of the tail, on the top of the bird.
I'd also advise looking up the active ingredients in flea shampoo and see if they are safe for use around poultry. They are pesticides and I hate the thoughts of using them needlessly.

This just gave me an idea. Since I have birds that let me handle them a lot, I might make a project to photograph some important anatomical areas such as the preen gland and crop locations for people new to birds. Maybe next week... :)

Today I got 7 eggs. Seven! Eggs!

Do you know what that means, my Derp-ees? It means that Derperella has laid an egg! Her first since last May!
