Derperella, the (weird) Faverolles, & Friends

Oh no no I can't breed Derp. She has a lot of problems, and I don't know if they are genetic or not... it would be very irresponsible for me to pass those on to other poor chicks! Remember, that Derp had a failure to thrive and nearly died many times. I don't know if her momma had problems, or deficiencies, or if there are bad genetics happening here.

I mentioned it on the other thread, but Derperella came from Meyer hatchery. It appears that their new 'standard' for Salmon Faverolles is Derp-colored! Which is wrong, of course, for Salmon Faverolles, but you know how it goes at a hatchery sometimes.
Coho also came from Meyer, same hatch date, but she is much closer to what a SF should look like.

As much as we all love Derp, we all have to be responsible about animal breeding too.

Plus, part of the charm of Derp is that she's a one and only

If anyone really wants a chicken that looks like Derp and has the quirky faverolles attitude, you could try Meyer / MPC (same source)... or, I know there are some people in the Faverolles thread here on BYC that are working on red/mahogany colored favs! They can be really sweet chickens. Even though Coho isn't "Deerrrrrr" derpy like Derp (say that 5 times fast), she is still goofy and cuddly, much more than the other breeds I have.
For anyone looking into Faverolles, it's a good thread! Though I should warn that my experience with them has been that they are sweet, sweet chickens, but very wimpy... The other chickens push them around. They can also be needy. Coho and Derp cry and carry on when I have to go back inside.

I just wanted to thank derp for introducing me to byc! I stopped in on a whim and started reading derps story, and simply had to join byc so that i could thank you from the bottom of my heart for derperella and her hilarious antics ! For my very first post on this forum, i couldnt think of a better thread to subscribe to! Hurrr hurr for derp! I hopefully will be getting chickens this spring so ive been doing an awful lot of serious reading. Derp has shown me it much better to have a derp-like attitude. At leadt it makes things much more entertaining!

Nambroth, your a good person not to breed Derp. As loving as she is, it is too cruel to bring chicks into this world who fail to thrive. If you love something you know when to care for it and stopping the passing of genetic defects is one of those times. You are also very lucky that she has made it to adulthood, I know one of my favorite new chicks on Hencam.com, Little Blue Sapphire a blue cochin pullet was also one who was a failure to thrive, she only made to around four and half to five months when her legs gave out and her owner to had to dispatch her. Something was wrong with her from the begining and while she had a good life she also struggle so much. The poor thing's feathers or legs gave her so much trouble. And she was always sitting down instead of running about as chicks are suppose to do.

Yes... this was always a fear for me with Derp. She had so much trouble surviving as a chick, I knew in my heart from that very first day that something could go wrong and I could lose her at any time. I'm so thankful that she seems healthy currently, but I know that some hidden problem could always rear up even now. It's why I was actually quite surprised when she started laying for us. Every day with this goofy little chicken is a blessing.
