Derperella, the (weird) Faverolles, & Friends

Fud Lady, is this what Derp does every day? I mean - you don't think she is going broody again - gasp!! I still remember the trials of the invisible chicks.

That is almost even worse since you have to wait so long!
I do remember reading a while back that Derp hadn't been laying for a few months, so I assume now that she is laying regularly in her own derpy way?

Yes, Derp lays regularly now. For her, that means maybe 4 times a week.

Is Derp missing her beard? If so do you know why? I have chick like that right now and starting to worry that it's not growing back :-(

Yes, both of my faverolles are. It is not uncommon for the other birds to "relieve" them of this unusual decoration. They seem to think that all chickens should have wattles and not silly beards. For whatever reason, but of my faverolles LET the other chickens eat their beards off with no protest.

Is your chick a fav? Is it from a hatchery? If it never grew a nice beard to start with... well. Hatchery chicks are not known for their conformity to breed. :(

Yes! This is what she does every day that she lays. This is "normal" and not broody behavior for her. You'd know if she was broody-- she'd be ANGRY! Neither of my favs lay every day. Maybe 4 times a week... 5 when they are really going. Almost none in the winter.

Wow, how unusual. I mean, with Derp, anything is possible, but I thought Favs were supposed to be good winter layers. Takes all kinds, I guess.

Thank you for the update and video. Hi sweet Derp!

I think well bred favs are probably good winter layers! Mine are anything but "well bred"!

Mine slow down a lot, to nearly just a few week between them all. If I added light, I'd probably get more, but I am a more let nature take its course type a girl.

I am too. I totally understand why people need production through the winter-- I know some depend on egg sales for income. But my girls are pets and I'd love to do anything I can to help them live to a ripe old age. I also delight in thinking I will get less eggs less often, but for more years. :)

My hen is an EE, just over 2 years old she didn't have much of a beard more 'cheek muffs' ..not sure what they are really called, most of those and a bunch of the feathers on her neck are gone, I'm not 100% sure if its the other hens doing it I've not caught any of them and the feathers have been missing for a couple months now.. My husband thinks they won't grow back until after she molts but I'm not so sure he knows what he's talking about, guess we'll see in a couple months or so.

I bet they will grow back when she molts, but if the other hens are doing it, they may well pull out the pinfeathers when they come in. Poor willow is stripped pretty bare by the evil Lorp right now in much the same way.

Some EEs also seem to have less full beards than others. They are essentially cross-bred birds and aren't a true breed so they don't have a standard.

I hope you're right, Sam is a very pretty hen (with or without her cheek feathers actually). And the lack of standard is actually why I got EEs, I wanted variety but couldn't choose so I just went for EEs that looked as different as possible when chicks and my girls are all pretty unique :)

So this is my most derpy hen. All of my other hens are laying hens, so she is the lone bantam of the bunch, She is a Mille Fleur de Uccle, and with the little cheek patches she really looks comical. Add to that the fact she walks like Charlie Chaplain, and when she runs, she gets very excited and starts hopping across the yard. She's quite the little cutie. Also VERY tiny, I might add.
