Derperella, the (weird) Faverolles, & Friends

We got my EE pullets in October and they are not very fond of people. The eight of them usually lay more pastel eggs in a day than our twelve brown egg layers.

They all run and squeak when I come in. Only one of the pullets, Abagail (oddly the only buff/white mix, the rest of them are a mix sorta like Fud Lady's lovely Panic Pants. Maybe they are from the same family?) is the only one who doesn't struggle when I give her a Person Hug. Regardless, I love them.

They are too terrified of the big, meanie hens that they refrain from escaping the coop on most occasions. (Except for Abby)

P.S. I am so excited that Derp is back!!!

She looks beautiful as always.

Hello Derperella Club members! I should make a little logo for signatures if you want one. What do you think? EDIT: Oh gosh I just remembered, we can't put images in our signatures here on BYC can we? Nah.. I just looked it up and no images are allowed. Well, if you want to put a little thing in your signature, you can put "Member of the Derperella Club-- We're just all goin' round' the rooster, here!"

So sorry it's been so long. It seems like my life has been inside a tumbleweed all year long, and it won't stop rolling long enough for me to get out and stretch my legs...

This spring we managed to put in a garden, two beds, 4'x16' each. I wanted to do three but we just ran out of money! Our yard is a sidehill and I had to terrace the beds into the yard so that my soil wouldn't wash away-- which would be a bummer for sure. It's been expensive to do, and hard work on top of that between my husband and gimpy me. I have some health problems and on top of that, it's been so hot-- not even just recently, but this spring was very hot too! I don't last long in the heat. Regardless, we got that done and my veggies are going to town. We got the two Easter Egger chicks, as well... one to "replace" Gullincambe (the rooster that had to be rehomed) and one to replace the cochin chick we lost last spring. Well, the fates heard me, and they sure did replace Gullin!! Darn it all... Panic Pants the new EE chick has turned out to be a rooster, too.

.....
.....
....sigh.

Panic Pants is very lovey, though. We shall see what happens when the hormones start to flow. I cannot have another rooster that injures my girls! That's not okay. Gullin was too big, too stompy, too rough. Panic, please stay sweet!

I've also been showing my art at various shows, though the local economy is not so hot and my paintings haven't sold. Ah well! I did a show in Pittsburgh last month where a lot of people order custom art to be done during the weekend, to be picked up right away! Oh gosh, let me tell you. Staying up all night to get paintings done in a panicked rush is not what it used to be! I am not very old yet but I can tell I'm not in my early 20s anymore, either. Yikes!
When I got home, I had some house guests for about 2 weeks. They were wonderful, but it does throw off the daily routine quite a bit. I am still trying to catch up!

Now I am completing some very intense paintings for duck stamp competitions, as entries, and preparing for a few more shows. Sadly, a friend if mine just passed away this week and my grandma is in the hospital, so I have a lot of different things on my mind. Please, if your beliefs allow for it, please consider becoming an organ donor.

Additionally, we are slow-cooking in this heat. We don't have air conditioning so it's been a bit miserable... especially sleeping at night. I just gave the hens a cold shower to help them out... now they are walking around like their legs are jello... you know the look! Squat-walking. "Woe! The Fud Lady sprayed us with water. We will never walk normally again!"

Okay, now to make an actual Derp Post!

Why don't you have any AC? It is sweltering hot too here in Mississippi!

Most of the old houses here in this part of the country are not set up with AC. Additionally, due to the weird windows in my home, I can't put a window unit in. Alas! My outside thermometer is reading 97°F which is pretty hot-- for here.

Wow - busy, busy girl!

Yes, when you have time, a little Derp logo for our signatures would be wonderful!
Very sorry to hear about your Grandma. I hope that she is able to be at home again soon.

OMG.. I feel so bad for anyone without AC this summer! Be sure to drink tons of water!

Nambroth, I too live in an older house we had AC installed when we moved in 5 yrs ago. Ended up with 2 ac set ups, one traditional furnace/ac for the first floor (cause they could ran ducts etc) and Fujitsu Mini Ductless unit for the upstairs. I think the Mini ductless unit is think is perfect for older homes; actually I believe
they are used a lot in Europe as I've seen them often on 'Home Hunters International".

These are good because you don't need to use the windows or install air ducts (we'd have had to break out a number of walls to do that upstairs!). They make them as AC or AC/Heating Units ... we did the AC/Heating so we have a back up to the old boiler as we just know that'll go out some day :-(

Anyway, Fujitsu isn't the only company that makes them and they are not real cheap, I googled them and found them from $1100 to $2500 so you possibly can't afford now but maybe something you can price out and put into the budget for the future.
