Derperella, the (weird) Faverolles, & Friends

I guess I just god a bad apple. i still don't know if I will ever get Faverolle though. Maybe a roo, but I just don't love the breed. Derp is cool though. I would get a DERP, (NOT a Faverolle) any day!;)

Loud is normal for the hens, though the roos in general are quiet, but being unfriendly should not be, it's against breed standard. Did yours come from a hatchery? They usually don't care about personality when they breed, but all my birds from breeders are sweet. I had one peep with an attitude in my bantams, but he was just overly curious about everything and fearless. My big roo follows me around, eats out of my hand and tries to get in the car when I leave and the hens are sweet too. They are shy as babies, but when they get to adult age they mellow out a lot and become a totally different bird. If you do decide to try them again maybe get at least 2 from quality stock. They tend to get bullied in a mixed flock and the featherpulling of yours may have been just a last resort or stress.

I know mine was not bullied. She was in a mixed flock of EE bantams, a Silkie, Polish, and an Orpington. None of them picked on her, she just started this out of the blue. She was from My Pet Chicken and would run away and scream when I tried to touch her.

When Derperella was young, she picked at the other chickens a lot. I am not sure if this is simply because she didn't know what she was supposed to eat, or what-- she IS Derp after all-- but it used to drive me batty. She'd just walk up to her "sisters" and start trying to eat their feathers. She never really pulled many out, but she just sort of chewed on them! I know that feather eating can be a symptom of nutritional deficiency, but careful observation led me to really think that it was behavioral in Derp. She did not grow out of it until she had completely molted into her adult colors. She was also not overly friendly with us (hugs sometimes, but not often) until she started to lay.

Derp is from the same stock as Chewy.

Maybe they were cousins! The thing with Chewy was that she was leaving the other hens backs bare. Almost to the point of drawing blood, we tried to break her, but it didn't work. Se preferred to pick on the bantams the most.

Aw, that's too bad! I understand your decision. Derp never hurt any of the other chickens. She just thought that perhaps food would come off of them, somehow.

Just started reading this thread, and am enjoying it very much.

Then I realize the art style and screen name look very familiar. Do we know each other from another obsession? (WS) ;) Nice to see you again!
