Derperella, the (weird) Faverolles, & Friends

My polish roo is LOUD! I love it. My current head roo is SF/silkie. He is great. Mr. Fluffers was the best. Can ya tell I loved him? Miss him too. Anyway, roger the silkie was also a great roo., but he got hawked twice, the second time killed him... Anyway... So far so good with my boys.

I think a Salmon Faverolle boy would be a wonderful addition to your flock!!

That said, I have 4 roosters and none are Favs. I have 2 EEs, a bantam cochin, and a light brahma. They are all very nice and good at their jobs, but my favorite by far is my brahma. You just can't beat him. He is always watching out for the girls, he breaks up squabbles, and even though he is huge he is very gentle on the ladies. None of that feather pulling. He will also sit in the doghouse with them when they're laying, whether it's to protect them or to cheer them on I don't know, but he is just the best! I'd consider getting one

Also, I owned a polish roo up until just recently when he passed away but he was not loud. I think I heard him crow maybe 10 times in his whole life. He was 30 weeks when he died but he started crowing at about 12 weeks.
Agreed! Faverolles boys are sweeties and so are silkie roos. If you want someone to watch over your flock I would go with the Fav's though, my silkie roo was sweet, but he couldn't see anything because of the fluff in his face and he wouldn't protect the girls. My friend brought her dog over once who chased my birds all over the place(I wasn't happy about that at all) and the silkie roo was the fastest to run and hide. 'Take the hens, just leave me alone' He wasn't the manliest little guy

My fav roo is huge, so he keeps cats and other predators at bay just because of his size. When I pick up one of the younger guys and they start squawking, he will come running to see what is going on, but will not show any aggressiveness towards me handling the other bird, he just wants to make sure everyone is ok.

i second that on the roos- my little cockerel hasn't crowed, or given treats to his girls but he will intervene in altercations- one of the girls was having words with one of the standard ee girls- and he promptly push between them and gave that girl a stink eye that obviously was very clear...

i think when i need another standard roo, i'll go with favs-

Nambroth, if you really want a rooster just wait and keep an open mind. The right one will come. At our local feed store, there are over a dozen roosters waiting around for new homes (or a stew pot). On the local BYC threads I follow, at least five people have offered roosters, some very nice, in the past 3 days. So many roosters, so few homes. Take your time, be picky, and you'll find the perfect boy for you and your girls. Of course when you do, please post pics!

:goodpost: and I totally agree, you will know when you have found the right one....There are SOO many roosters that need homes, it makes me sad that they get pushed aside mainly because of their crowing. Wish I lived closer to ya, I would love to help you find your roo. :love

The trouble is... I really like roosters (when they are are not violent!). I don't mind some teenage hormones-- I know that it's part of the bird, and I accept that a roo is going to want to mount his girls sometimes, and there might be a little chasing now and then. It's the harming of the girls that I cannot tolerate. I love the mannerisms of a rooster, their noises, how they can be sweet to the girls! And so when I saw a fellow local BYC member needs a home for a few LF Cochin roos I felt a twinge. Maybe I should try one, to save him from the stew pot, if he's sweet? But, as you might guess, I am twice bitten, twice shy about aggressive roosters now! So I am very nervous to dedicate to a new rooster. That said, I have read that cochin roosters are some of the most sweet and gentle boys there are. What do you think? Should I try or should I just appreciate the 'peace'? Has anyone had experience with cochin roosters?
My bantam cochin rooster is the sweetest thing! I thought he would actually be picked on since he is so small, but he tends his own business very well. My NHR hen has been getting feisty with him, getting her knickers in a bunch and going after him. He just stands up on his tip toes and stares her in the face. In my experience, cochin roosters are so sweet and friendly, protective, and great with kids (a must in my family!).

With his girls!

i was looking though everything in your shop, and i would like to know if you would be able to put the drawing of derp as a chick with the qtip in her mouth as a picture on a mug??

LOL sorry if that was confusing and worded strangely! i havent had my coffee yet!

Nambroth i so wish you live closer to me, I have a wonderful nice Buckeye Roo that would be perfect for your house. Even though he is kept separate from my girls because my main roo Zeus would not tolerate it, he still does his best to attempt to call them over for treats, and protect them whenever he feels its important. So, if you find a buckeye roo in your area I would recommend them also. They are very wonderful to be around, 3 of the 4 I have were wonderful nice boys... one of them had too big of a head because he won ribbons that the fair and had to go to the pot, but otherwise many people love them for protection and being wonderfully nice.

On the other hand I fully agree with a Fav roo, I have one of those also and he is a dream to be around and work with. 'Lenny" id only about 4 months old but is already a gentleman to the girls and knows when to back off. He is learning from Zeus what to do and how to do it!

My Roger was NOT a wuss. He was a protector. He took on and beat the crap out of a big RIR cockerel. That poor cockerel was hiding in a corner, traumatized! He also stood guard over his girls and chicks, and after a raccoon raided and killed his hen and 5 of the chicks, he raised the last 3 on his own. Then with the next hen, a white silkie, he had 4 chicks, fostered by other moms, but one of them is a Roger Jr. He's only 3 months old nearly, and he stands guard with while Criptoe is out with her chicks. It is so funny. He's not even crowing yet, but he sure is a manly little guy.
Nambroth,
have you thought about getting a male duck? That's what my neighbors have for their chickens, and it works pretty well.

I'm a fan of the duck solution...lol Derp and the duck would make for some very interesting stories!
A male duck, with no female ducks around may decide that the chicken hen looks good. Now you will have a dead hen because a male ducks parts are like prongs. A female hen is not built to accept a ducks part, and will become seriously injured inside. A male duck is not a solution. I might be fine for a minute, but it can become a very dangerous situation.
