Hey Guys, I am new to keeping chickens and have just started doing research. I have a decent size back yard and I am trying to figure out a design for a coop/run. I have anywhere from 10' by 15' to 15' x 15' for run coop area. Do you guys have any design suggestions?...What would be the optimal amount of chickens for a coop this size?

Thanks for your help.

It's more a matter of their total area available, which is partly dependent on climate, and even then, there isn't a single best answer. Where I live, they need little indoor space, and that doesn't need to be enclosed by solid walls all the way around, by any means. Here, they need shade and breeze because of the heat -- which they also need anwhere summers get hot. In Minnesota, I would have a completely different kind of coop with a much larger indoor area for the cold months. This is a good article on space:

If you did like an 8x8 coop inside the 15x15 run you could comfortably get 10-15 in there I would think. However, there's a lot of adjustments to be made based on breeds, size, weather, ground conditions, like Judy suggests.

Where do you live, and do you have the breed(s) of chickens in mind that you were interested in?
