Oh, and the super restrictive home checks and stuff is really sad! Like you said, it is one thing to want the animals to go to a good home, but that is taking it a bit far!

i was going for a great dane. But i just couldn't bring myself to pay 500-600+ dollars on a dog i could lose in a year to heart failure.. i wanted one badly though.

My pet peeve is all of the poodle mixes. I love the poodle breed, especially the standards, and the whole Labradoodle movement makes me cringe!

There are so many breeds I love, and I have mixed feelings about it. For instance, when I was a child, we had English bulldogs ( a misnomer to the purist), but if you think about why they were "created" (bull-bating) and the results (dogs with difficulty breathing, heavy loads on their hearts and short life spans), it's kind of cruel.

"Designer Dogs" are just a way for people to squeeze extra money out of naive people who have to have a label for everything they have. They are mutts. just plain old mutts. BTW, I would rather have a just plain old mutt anyway.

I get my baby Great Dane on July 4th and I just can't wait!!! I am going to be super careful about how I feed him, etc. to try and make sure I don't end up with any of the possible health issues. It has been my lifelong dream dog.

I agree, big greg barker, mutts are great! I have only had one pure dog in my life and that was a poodle when I was a kid. Now I will have my Great Dane, but for me, mutts are usually the route I take.

And I have loved them all dearly!!!

I agree, Stumpy, but even if the reasons these breeds of dog were created seem bad, it was a LONG time ago and someone thought it made sense at the time. I don't think anyone ever thought a Labradoodle made sense. I have never heard anyone say "Oh dear, I just wish my Labrador was a bit more sensitive and had some of the traits of my wife's poodle". LOL

IF i had $10,000 I'd pay to get all those "designer" breeds fixed!
The only time I'd spend my top dollar on ($1500) would be to get a miniature bull terrier. The most amazing dog ever...in my opinion

My dad used to hate chihuahuas because he had the general thought process most do...they shake, ankle biters, big ugly eyes... but if you get the right type they are awesome critters. My dad falls alseep petting them on the couch now! he he.

Don't even get me started on animal shelters....oooh boy... I don't like them either.

ROFL.....ummmm.....you just described EXACTLY what I used to think all chihuahuas were!!! I could just picture those bulging eyes staring at you while it shook and peed the floor just because you happened to breathe!!! I am really glad I learned different because they are such cool little doggies!!!

Yeah I love the breed, and I keep it small, I only have a litter a year, and they get all the attention and care they can get!

I do not believe in supporting designer dog breeders, backyard breeders or puppy millers. As far as rescues, yes they have a strict adoption policy but you have to remember why or how the dogs are in the rescue/foster homes. Most of their dogs they rescue have been subjected to some form of abuse or neglect and they are trying ensure the dog a happy, safe life and a forever home.

Impulse buying is a huge problem with the increase in our dogs in shelters and rescues. Again, this is a good reason some of the more reputable rescue groups will do a home visit. Before re-homing the dogs, these volunteers want to make sure that this is going to be a good fit for the dog and the new family.

For every puppy purchased from a backyard breeder, pet store or puppy miller, the buyer(s) is encouraging these people to breed again and again. It's amazing how many people when they get their "purebred" puppy decide not to spay or neuter their dog and have it in their mind to have just one litter to pay for their dog's original cost or my dog's personality is so great, just one litter or oops - my dog got pregnant by accident and it just so happened to be the same breed of dog.

I think that mutts are just fine, as long as that's why they are but I am a big advocator of spaying and neutering. Also, if one is looking for one particular breed, rescue or a reputable breeder that does all the health testing (not just "vet checked") and breeds for the improvement and betterment of the breed are the way to go.

Annoying little ankle biters is what i always saw them as.. High pitched barks etc.
