I hope this doesn’t violate any policies, and I know it’s far from the biggest issue we’re facing today, but I have written to the FDA and created a change.org petition requesting that they change the regulations to allow vets to prescribe deslorelin implants for pet chickens. If you are of like mind, please consider signing and sharing my petition: https://chng.it/DzRJsvJjmQ

I’m new to this, so if anyone knows who besides the FDA might be able to help, please let me know!https://chng.it/DzRJsvJjmQ

Your vet can use it off label for pet birds if there is no other available alternative, for commercial birds it would be illegal but there is no reason it can’t be used off label under ELDU for treating a particular bird for a particular issue as long as it won’t enter the human food chain. I am curious what your reasons for wanting to get it labeled for chickens is? I will say unless it is profitable, nobody will ever do the testing to get it approved.

FDA requires lots of testing to change the label on animal drugs (read millions of dollars required), sending them a petition won’t do squat. Any licensed and accredited vet can legally administer the drug in an off label manner if a particular case medically requires it and the bird or its eggs will never be eaten by the public. You may need to find an avian vet or a food animal or mixed practitioner that is willing to do a little research and try new things. This would be a great option for hens that lay wonky eggs (just culled one like that but I’m also not going to spend the money to get an implant to stop it!).

You say that any licensed vet can administer or prescribe off label, but they won't. No one I know that has a vet willing to do it. They all say the same mantra "I will lose my license". I found a way around it and am implanting myself. I take my hat off to @Artsy_Teacher for this petition. I have signed it, supported it and sent to many.

Thank you. My girl finally passed, and it was heartbreaking. I hope it’s nothing I ever have to experience again. Crazy how attached you can get to these girls! 💕

I am sorry for your loss:hugs ❤️
I hope and pray that your petition for backyard chicken to have implant successful.

Perhaps you might like to do a thread and post picture of your little hen, write story about her life if that ease your pain temporary.

Each time one of my flock pass away, my heart break a piece, days of crying, I find comfort in them buried in my backyard because I can say good morning and good night to them. The pain has not gone away, it is just quiet down.
❤️

Why on earth would they lose their license? Maybe they aren’t comfortable doing it or aren’t familiar with ELDU or don’t want to bother with it but it isn’t illegal or against most veterinary practice acts (maybe in California it is?), but there is a ton of latitude for pets (meaning your treated birds CANNOT ever enter the food chain or their eggs), but it isn’t on the list of prohibited drugs in food producing species, but that is avoidable even if it were by making them pets. It is illegal to use steroid hormones for production purposes in food animals but not for therapeutic reasons (which this would be, in pet animals). And who exactly are you petitioning? FDA is never going to approve it without lots of expensive testing. The individual state veterinary licensing boards control licensing, they aren’t going to care since it isn’t really an issue. While I applaud your civic aspirations, this isn’t going to accomplish anything. Find a cow or exotic vet who is willing to work with you, if they treat ferrets or feedlot steers this isn’t a scary or weird or novel idea, small town, rural, small sized or exotic specialty practices are probably more likely candidates than big, corporate practices. This is a ‘I don’t want to bother with it’ issue not a ‘highly illegal and won’t happen’ issue.

What did she have? I am very sorry you lost her. I have 2 with EYP and one with reproductive cancer. I lost one - my Faith, last week, and still cannot stop crying. I have placed 4 implants thus far. All of the production breeds are getting implants.
