Desperate! Why did no one tell me this about chickens?

Being fairly new to chicken ownership and having read about the ease of keeping chickens, even in one's urban backyard, I wasn't expecting this. I am now having to get rid of my pullets which are just starting to lay, which I've raised from chicks. The squawking is unbearable. This isn't pleasant chicken clucking either. And it's all because they want out of their pen which I thought was of suficient size: It's 7'x13' and 7' high and now houses 4 chickens. Plus they have their henhouse which is raised off the ground. They stop their complaining the minute I let them out. The problem is I used to let them out 2-3 times a day; it's now less frequent as my s.o. doesn't want them "ruining the yard." So every few hours, and it can last several hours, they pace the pen at the side closest to where they know I am (closest the the house) and emit the chicken equivalent of screaming bloody murder. You would think they were being slaughtered, which the s.o. is about to do if I don't get rid of them or put a stop to this. They got a taste of freedom and now want it all the time. Please, any suggestions or similar experiences with this? I've already given the worst offender to a site member here--drove almost 2 hours to meet her-- and will have to do the same with the rest. This is causing daily fighting in the household. Or is there anyone local that will take them? I live 10 miles north of Bellingham, WA. Thanks.

My hens free range from about 2:00 pm til they are ready for bed.. They do make the the "screaming" that your talking about but only when they see me.. If they dont see me.. they dont do it.. Its like they are yelling at me to come let em out.. lol... I keep them in chicken tractors and move them around close to the house to try and deter raccoons. If they screamed any other time I would hear them.. I havent seen anyone else mention this.. I live out and dont have any neighbors so I never thought much of it..

Maybe you should re-home the S.O...

Sorry to hear about the squaking!

I'm not sure if this helps or not, but when I let my chickens free range, I was worried about them ruining the yard as well. The grassy area in their run quickly became "grass free". I've been free ranging them for about 2 months now and have not noticed any negative change in my yard.

Good luck!

They used to do it only when they see me but now that's not the case.

I agree with rehoming the S.O too LOL...

My chickens free range from 10 am til dark which right now is about 8:30pm... They have not litterally destroyed our yard except in and around the chicken coop... But, I can also say... I never have to mow the lawn (still green), I don't worry about tics, mosqitos, chiggers, beetles, mice, or even bees... But mind you... I also have over 50 chickens, 5 ducks, 4 turkeys... If you would like, I will go out and take a picture of my lawn...
