destruction and disposal orders HELP

"Federal law gives APHIS the authority to depopulate affected herds and flocks to contain or stop the spread of the disease."

John and Davids birds tested NEGATIVE ! John was treated fairly, David got screwed.

I don't believe anyone here is questioning the severity of the AI issue, I certainly hope not.

The question is, how is the decision made which flocks are destroyed and which are quarantined.

If there is anyone here that would fight having their flock euthanized IF it tested positive, I'd be disappointed.

We understand the threat, both to the commercial industry and our heritage breeds.

That doesn't mean a government agency has the right, under the constitution of this country, to seize and destroy without cause.

I really didn't want to get involved in this, I understand the threat to the industry very well. They are my neighbors, they shop where I do, they contribute to my community. I actually try to limit my contact with farmers to "over the fence conversations" simply to protect their livelihood, not an easy task when surrounded by farms, poultry, cattle and pork, as well as a few exotic species.
That doesn't mean I'm going to deprive myself of animals for my own needs.

We must all do our part in stopping the spread of this diseaese while not giving up our own rights.

I believe John has done this in a responsible manner. It is unfortunate he had to go through what he did for what is right.

I most def. agree with you

I'd like to know if it's affected or altered poultry shows in any way. I don't show poultry. I would just like to know what steps are being done to prevent it from spreading.

In Pennsylvania all poultry shows at fairs and such are banned. I think each state makes their own rules.

I personally cancelled demonstrations I do most years as a precaution Even though there is no evidence of it in this state.
Here too, I think it's state wide, I know it is for our county, they have band poultry shows at fairs, and trade shows for the time being.

Federal law gives APHIS the authority to depopulate affected herds and flocks to contain or stop the spread of the disease.
Affected- and his birds were not. Yes, by all means contain and depopulate affected/infected animals. But we are not arguing that those should be taking care of. We are fighting and apparently arguing that negative tested birds should not by any means be destroyed.

All poultry shows, community sales, swaps and auctions have been canceled in Ohio,Michigan, and Indiana. All state sponsored activities In New York and Pennsylvania. I believe Iowa has followed suit with Ohio- Minnesota not sure. The regulations are changing daily and if you plan on shipping or receiving eggs you need to contact the state ahead of time to see what that they are requiring. Virginia requires import permits. Kentucky you need to ask the state for permission. In Ohio- you cannot bring in any birds or eggs from any states with infections.

things are looking great here every day....day 14 and the 1/2 way point with happy healthy birds!

while i appreciate everyone trying to ease my guilt, i think you'd all feel somewhat guilty as well --- i didn't search out the legalities and the restrictions like i should have before purchasing the eggs --- like i said before, my birds tested clean before i brought them here in january and i hoped for the best by ONLY ordering eggs --- i'd twitch whenever i got an egg with some'dirt' still on it (i almost always wash my eggs before incubating, but it still made me uncomfortable....)... in the back of my mind, i knew i should have been filling out paperwork --- i HATE paperwork....i really wish everybody the best here (you too, chicken vet)... wouldn't be what it is right now without all of you

the links have been great for info and seeing the other side as well...

i don't know if i mentioned it or not, but i received a very nice letter from the governor's office basically saying as long as i follow the qt like i've been, everything should be fine

And I truly believe responsible chicken owners should avoid shows, swaps, auctions, etc for now until this potential epidemic is under control, regardless of where they are located. It is the safe responsible thing for us all to do to protect ourselves and the industry.

I'm always interested in the poultry at the fairs in the county, but also wary of the possibility of picking up some foreign bacteria to my chickens that they haven't built resistance to. It's a balancing act, to be sure.

I want to thank everyone for their helpful information gathering and posting it is a very helpful resource to be able to come here and read what might affect you or to disarm myths and anxiety. The info. I just recently read from Seminolewind was awesome as are many of the others. I really feel for those being affected by the threat of the culling of their flocks. I'm not sure that even time will heal the sting from these outbreaks and threats from the various agencies. I'm sorry if some of you took me as being insensitive. None of you really know me but I do feel badly for what what you are or have been going through.

A big Thankyou to John for initiating this discussion unfortunately for the cause it was…..It has helped considerably the understanding of what is happening in each of our states and what we can do, our limitations, and knowing we all have someone to listen and learn from….No one here wants to see destruction of healthy birds. Unfortunately, if it is indeed spread by bodily fluids,,,,,we must remember, not just water fowl, but any birds, rats, flies, other roaming animals that could step in something and track it from anywhere to us.

Something that also disturbs me is that diseases continue to mutate so this years could evolve into something worse next year. There isn't a process to allow for natural selection to make birds stronger. We don't dare keep birds that have been sick because then they have the titers if tested or some diseases once in the bloodstream continue to shed after they become healthy again.

A question i had asked long ago before this; are eggs still carriers of AI or Coryza or ??? if they have been in a bleach bath prior to hatching. Meaning….is it *in * the egg or on the *outside* of the egg.

Crossing my fingers this is controlled soon.
