In NY you have to buy 6 chicks (I know some people get around it by paying for 6 and taking less, but I didn't do that), but being a small family, in a small yard, I think 4 hens will be a good number for us, so i have a friend I'm giving the other two to when they are a couple months old (a couple weeks from now). She has chickens of her own (for eggs and meat) so she's well prepared. For her they are very utilitarian/food providers, but for us they are pets too.
I'm having trouble deciding which two to give her... I have two "favorites" who I'll keep for sure, but how do I pick who to get rid of? Should I pick the two that are the most aloof/skittish? One skittish and one more friendly? Should I give the one who seems to be settling into top girl spot or keep her? Or should I just randomly grab two when the time comes?
