Deterring a Hawk- Covering A Large Garden

Resurrecting an old thread to ask the old-timers if the same deterrents work for bald eagles and for hawks. Seems like we have both of them this year. We were never able to go eagle watching from our yard before we got chickens.

Also, where do I find 50# filament? Everything around here is 6# or 8# or microfilament.

TIA,

Elisabeth

I personally had no problems with hawks or raccoons until it got cold...in the past month I have trapped 3 coons and also have two hawks regularly flying over. The only thing I can tell you is that in the warmer months the hawks seemed to leave my chickens alone ...
Hawks are migratory. Many if not most of the hawks you see in Georgia this winter, will be in the North East or even Canada by the spring thaw. My wife and I make a game out of spotting hawks sitting on power lines. We see maybe 10 times more in the winter than during the summer months.

I am in the process of stringing fishing line over my large chicken run and attached garden area. I am using 30 lb. line. I got the line from WalMart and ebay. Mine is in a grid pattern one foot apart in both directions.
As soon as I had the line strung in one direction it seemed that the hawks lost interest. I am almost done stringing it the other direction but am waiting on more line to be delivered.
I have my fence at 6 feet high and attached the fish line to it across the yard. Pull it tight as it stretches a lot.
I had hawks that would land on the ground and chase the chickens on foot. Even with cover the hawks would get them. So far I am loving the fish line!
