Detox Your House and Cosmetics! What do you do?

We make all our own soap. Usually out of cheap shop bought oils but its better anyway.

We make liquid soap, hot process with potassium hydroxide instead of sodium hydroxide, for the laundry and dishes.

One hint on that, laundry soap must be balanced differently from other soaps!

Eg: "Standard" soap is a balanced thing, all the oil saponified, all the caustic neutralized.

Nice, creamy body soaps are usually "Super Fatted", which is to say slightly over estimated on the oils. This way they don't dry the skin.

Do not do superfatted or even standard soap for the laundry.

Why?? Well when your guests try to help with the dishes, and discover the tea towels are WATERPROOF ... and just smear water from one surface to another ... you'll work it out!!

Laundry soap has to be over estimated on the caustic. Well overestimated actually ... I used double to normal proportion last time, although my KOH is getting a bit sad so maybe only as good as 1.5x, but to my amazement it is not caustic to handle at all. Its great. I mixed the second water portion of the liquid soap with washing soda too and the towels actually dry things now!!

@Leighe you are cracking me up! You poor darling!:hugs I mean electric fences and now this???

And yes the Thieves stuff, you can do that in vinegar too but a GREAT idea for insect repellant with the EOs! Will look for a recipes...also healing and repels disease, very very old from the middle ages...need to remember the EOs. Rub the cream on your feet for overnight...healing!

Here it is:

  • 20 drops clove essential oil
  • 18 drops lemon essential oil
  • 10 drops cinnamon bark essential oil
  • 8 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 5 drops rosemary essential oil
Combine all oils and store in a dark glass container (where to buyaff link). This makes a fairly small amount, so feel free to double or triple the recipe.

Ideas for use:

  1. Use this blend in your essential oil diffuser to purify the air.
  2. Mix this blend into your homemade cleaning products for an extra punch.
  3. Dilute the blend, then rub it on the soles of your feet.
*Very Important Note* Some of the oils contained in this blend are very hot and can burn your skin if used undiluted. It is very important to dilute this blend in a carrier such as fractionated coconut oil or sweet almond oil before using them on your skin.

I added some sweet almond oil right in the bottle with my blend and made a little note on the bottle,
Yeah, I forgot to say "Thieves" can burn some people. I use it straight from the bottle but will probably start diluting it when I make it. One time I had it on some fire ant bites on my right foot. I walked into our local convenience store, where they all know me and as I walked by, one of the cashiers said "It smells like Christmas all of a sudden". I laughed and said I had put "Thieves" on my fire ant bites so they wouldn't itch and the owner was there and she said "Christmas on your foot", :lau. Guess the cloves and cinnamon were a little strong :hmm

Since this is about detoxing, what do you guys do about medication?

I use homeopathy when possible. Great for basic headaches. There's one I use for the kids for bug bites. Arnica in homeopathic or gel form for bumps and bruises.

Grapefruit seed extract is a great natural antibiotic/antifungal. Gave it to my chicks when they got sick last spring and lost only the chick who brought the illness.

Unfortunately high blood pressure runs in my family so I have to take medication for that. I also have migraines and homeopathy is where I start with treatment. If it doesn't work I will get out the big gun, but sometimes that doesn't work either so one is as good as the other imho. Finally, I have chronic urticaria...I basically live with hives every day, for the last five years or so. I've managed to get to where I'm ok with medication on the nights I don't work the next day instead of having to take it every day. Homeopathy hasn't worked for that issue, but modern medicine can't fix it either.

So, what do you guys do?

I grow wheat fodder for my pullets because I haven't been able to find barley suitable for growing, and I'd rather buy it at a store vs online. hard red winter wheat berries grow beautifully for me though. I currently have some growing in my window with rye berries mixed in...the wheat is already over an inch tall whereas the rye is about 1/4" LOL

Various herbs, lemon, and raw honey are amazing for the common flu, and of course green tea!

We don't take any prescription drugs right now- hubbs has sleeping problems but we fix that with herbs.

We all take vitamin C, B12 and D. We up the C in icky season :) if someone does get sick we use high dose C, oregano oil, thieves to get rid of it.

I haven't been to a doctor in.....15 years. :lau I do realize that 90% of that is me being extra fortunately blessed with good health.

Oh! Also, when I was pregnant with my now 22 month old, the last few weeks my BP spiked. I took magnesium in a drink form, and lemon juice mixed with cream of tartar! Worked like a charm.

Using that basic balm recipe above, I steep an herb, say calendula, in olive oil for eight hours in a jar in a water bath and then strain out the herb...then adding beeswax and melting, i have a healing balm...so for that uticaria I would look up healing herbs which help with itching and make a balm out of that...chickweed is supposed to be a good one. I bet you find a combo that would work, and you might want to try ichthammol ointment...just to see. I wonder if a castor oil pack would help the uticaria also.

So i have gathered a lot of dried herbs to make these balms....
