Devastated :(

No you are not, I have a husky that can and will open the back gate now there is a bolt to prevent that we had the bolt on the outside part of the gate until someone was removing the bolt now it is on the inside part of the gate. I also have a beagle mix that can and has in the past cleared a 6 foot privacy fence he spent a year on a tether now he does not jump the fence. I think that having a dog escape once in a while is one thing but allowing your dog to run is another. I hope that the OP and her neighbors can work out a way to keep the dog and chickens safe.

Would have to agree with this!

My heart goes out to you on the loss of your chickies and glad one came home!

. I do have to agree with the fshinggrl though. While it's nice that they are reimbursing you for your losses, you seriously should not have to ask (let your neighbor's know) everytime you want to let your livestock free range. BS IMO. Farmer's don't need to let all of their neighbor's know when their livestock is out to pasture and chicken owner's shouldn't have to either. (Now if your birds go into their yard-THAT'S another story, but otherwise, you have the right to do with your property what you want-as long as you're not hurting anyone/anything else)

Last Saturday, two wandering yellow labs found my little hobby farm and on my way home from work, I got a call that they had tortured my baby blue swedish ducklings (2 mos.), ripping the head off and guts out of one and the feet and wing from another. I have one of the three left and it has a limp and was absolutely terrified. They also killed one of my little roosters.

The labs came back on Easter and I was so ready for them. I chased them with a little shovel into my sister's yard and landed two good/hard smacks with the back of it to one's rear end. A good lesson for all of the dog's to see, I thought. My sister's dogs are allowed to run loose and DO run into my yard. I will not tolerate anymore dogs running into my yard and tormenting my birds. I don't have to and I won't. Even my sister's dogs who are sweet will find a BB in their behind if I see them chasing my birds. (though, I'm loving the paint ball idea-would take some time for the owner to get that out now, wouldn't it? think it might be a little embarrassing for the dog to have to wear that paint smell too-lol-he'd probably have to go find the biggest mud pit/cow patties around to roll in to mask that paint scent-LOVING this idea!-thanks suzeqf!) Mu-hahaha I think that would send the message out that you were pretty dang

. Any other dog owner's that consider letting their dog's run would also get the message, I would think?

The people with the yellow labs (from miles away) came and picked them up at my sister's house. She had called the vet to see if anyone was missing any and the owner's had just called the vet not long before that. I believe that the owner's should reimburse me for my ducklings and I do think that I will be giving them a call.

ETA-I am a dog lover myself and have a German Shorthair that is an inside dog except when it's nice out and he is tied. He is making a muddy mess with the circles that he tears into the yard, so we bought him a large, used kennel just yesterday to run in when he wants to play outside. The fellow that we bought it from constructed a roof for it because his German Shepherd climbed out of it even at 6' high. Having my chickens, I believe, has made me more of a responsible dog owner and even if he did happen to get out of his kennel, went down the road, bred someone else's dog/ripped into someone's garbage/killed someone else's birds/caused damage to a vehicle that HIT him, I believe, >YES<, I should be held responsible for my irresponsibility as a dog owner for not keeping him securely contained.

I live out in the country and swore that I would never have a dog that I had to tie. I got fine's from the dog warden for my dog chasing a bike rider (who, by the way, wrecked from a neighbor's dog chasing him and sued the pants off said neighbor after going head over wheels in a somersault.). My dog also got hit by a truck and caused damage to the bumper that I paid for.
Back to the responsibility, there is no sense arguing with a dog warden over accidental escapes (they know that a dog CAN be contained securely if the dog owner makes the extra effort). They will issue fine's because of it.

My chicken chaser is a husky pyrenees mix. He is not actually a killer, just a chase and play brained boy. Unfortunately play means death to a chicken - maimed bird needing me to put it out the rest of the way. Wondering how your husky is with the birds?
We've been given every kind of advice - from the dead bird around his neck to the get rid of him. I have found careful and constant care is the actual remedy, we plan to try a muzzle to see if he can't just get along - especially with the turkeys.
For the comfort and security of all, we are running a 4 foot fence - yes he could quite easily jump it but he doesn't - he's not a jumper, he's a chaser - he's rustles mice out of the ferns, has been quilled a few times by the porkies, and brings me deer parts from the back woods trails.
No, our dogs (we have a giant lab mix too, but he's a chicken mama boy) do NOT roam about like it sounds, we are in the woods with plenty of land and only one sort of nearby neighbor who says in 6 years he's never once seen our dogs on his land (but sees our cats every once in a long while).
