Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

No Island here Mossyrock is in Lewis county.
Tiny town we do not get mail delivery in town that small.
Our power went out for about a hour here it was a transformer that went here must have been more.
We have Power from our county PUD they get it from the Tacoma power has two dams here.
Was there someone on here on Bainbridge?

On a brighter note made Cowboy pickled eggs. Made just a small batch wanted to try them out. The girls are given us about 6-7 eggs a day now not bad since 1 girl RIR BigRed is now almost 5 years old. (oh I have 11 girls by the way) I think she maybe done laying but I do catch her in the coop tryen to sit on everyone's else's eggs lol she don't stay long. If i find her in there i just let her be and about an hour later she's done and doesn't go back in until the next day. I know I have 2 that are not laying Pepper that is sick and BigRed so not bad 9 laying hens and 6-7 eggs a day is more then enough for us.

These look delicious! Another way to use and preserve surplus. Recipe? Only if you don't mind sharing.

We got SO MUCH SNOW - and it didn’t stick, just snowed all day.

The girls didn’t know what to make of it.

These freeloaders still don’t want to sleep in the coop, and to add insult to injury they’ve been laying eggs on the floor under the coop instead of the nest boxes.

I tried putting some furniture back there to prevent it and they just squeezed in next to it, so I’ve got to come up with something else.

I was thinking of throwing a wooden lattice or something back there so that it’s not comfortable to lay on. If yall have any suggestions I’m here for it! Building out the nest boxes was a lot of extra engineering so it’s driving me a little nuts that they won’t use ‘em! We put fake eggs in and everything.
Old habits die hard. Wishing you luck.

Good morning Washington. How's everyone's chickens doing? Ours sure enjoyed a couple days of sun. They will still come out now, but they tend to find outdoor shelters to hang out in. It's funny because they have so much room in the outdoor enclosure to their coop, but they with all cram together into a small space under an a-frame made from crates with plastic over the top. They are such funny little creatures.

The young NHs that I combined with the 5 NH hens in the double run only went into the outdoor section one time, so I gave them no choice today.

I divided the inner run from the coop and outer run and gave the old girls the inner section. The young ones have the coop and the outside run to live in.

I'll give them a week or two to feel comfortable in the outdoor run, then open things back up again. Hopefully it will break them of the habit of staying in the inner run all the time.

The young NHs have been spending most of their time bunched up in a tight group during the day, usually in the nest box which is just wrong. I think it's been stressing out the older layers.

Now that they're separated things should be better.

The five NH hens laid 4 eggs in the box not long after they were separated from the young ones. They all seem more relaxed now. There was only one egg in the other run today, from the RIR hen I think.

Weeded the little patch of chives, which are sending up lots of little shoots now.

My chives are coming up nicely too. DH separated them into four plants. Not sure what I'll do with that many chives.
I read that chives should be completely trimmed back a few times during the season to promote new, tender growth. I do that, then chop them and put them in the freezer to use. Very handy that way.

If I have a lot I'll use handfuls of them in place of or with onions in a recipe. Good cooked into scrambled eggs too.

I should have added some to the four chicken leg quarters I just put into the oven. But I did add thinly sliced shallot over the top, so all is well.
