Hello I didnt really want to start a new thread... Not sure how this forum takes to ton of new treads but anyway...
I just started raising chickens, have 2 black star, ameraucana and buff orph's. I picked them up from a small time distributor in my area. He had plenty of chicks and a couple flocks in runs around his yard. All looked reasonably healthy and happy.
My troubles started a few days after getting them home, theyre all pretty happy and most are big time eaters but one of the ameraucanas is having some issues. Shes started doing this sneezing or coughing... I cannot really tell what the difference would be. I want to say she sounds raspy when breathing but its a little difficult to hear. I should also note that shes not growing as fast as the others. She eats fairly normally, runs around but she has this look, that listless look about the eyes where you know something is amiss.
Over the past day or so shes been sneezing/coughing more often but there isnt any buildup of mucous or eye problems and shes still pretty energetic, poops normal to (they all have a spot of diarrhea but most of the time everyones firm, I should note i am using medicated feed)
Now heres where im at a loss. Does she have something like crd? Should I call the distributor and ask if hes had trouble with it? It sounds like everyone all over the country is having crd issues but after doing some research here on byc im torn as to the cause. I havent treated them with anything for worms or parasites, is that something that people normally do right away? Ive read about ls-50 but they are a day away from being 7 already and the bottle says chicks up to 7 days...
Im using straw bedding but i switched to shredded paper after she started sneezing, I run an air filter near the brooder and tried to get as much dust out as possible but she still sneezes. Aside from deworming should I even bother with an antibiotic if it is crd? Ive read mixed reviews about the efficacy of duramycin and terramycin. I was 5 min away from ordering tiamulin from the qc supply store as its recieved such glowing reviews in the treating of respiratory problems in birds but it is costly and apparently there are issues with legality.
I dont want to bring my birds to the vet as most will try and rook you for rediculous amounts of cash (my gfs crazy family brings their little dog in with the slightest sniffle and spend 100's just on the visits) but I worry for their health. Should I not worry about the coughing until she gets mucousy as well? Should I deworm anyway just because I havent yet? If I do buy tiamulin, dosage advice?
Thanks all.
Ps I forgot to mention my chicks are straight run so the size difference may be a gender difference?
Edit: Both the buffs are starting to cough now too, just like the ameraucana. Starts slow then gets more loud. Still no runny noses or anything.
