Diamond Dove with Crest

Thanks for the offer, but she is my pet. If we were nearer I would gladly sell you all her chicks though. I am from the UK, but now live in Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand. Are you in America?

Oh, you live in Chiang Mai? My friend was in Myanmar for a long vacation (once you're there, its hard to leave I guess) and they stayed in Chiang Mai. They worked at a tiger sanctuary and volunteered. They stayed at Liams Guesthouse I believe. They are now back in Myanmar, in Yangon for now........ nice to know there are BYC members everywere!

Yes I know that tiger place, its about 30 minutes from my house! Small world.

Its great for birds over here. They are so so cheap to buy. I have noticed a huge difference in appearance and health of many of the pet birds sold over here compared to Europe.

In UK our budgies are mostly big birds with big course feather and a huge head with small eyes. Here in Thailand they are very small indeed, with a small head and big eyes. They are also found more colours here with mauves and lilacs common. In an pet shop in the UK you will usually find only greens, yellow and blues.

Zebra finches too as so so small here. They are commonly found in all the colours that are rare in the UK. lots of black ones too. They are half the size of the ones in the uk and the feathers seem looser to the body.

I see a lot of Gouldain finches here, but sadly they are nearly always the yellow ones. I have yet to see a natural coloured one. Shame as I really want some!!!!!!!

You would be in bird heaven if you had a holiday over here and visited some of the pet markets.

I have to say that the birds are sometimes kept very crowded conditions and not at all what we could accept in the UK. However, they seen much more healthy and hardy than the uk ones. In the UK I often paid lots of money from posh pet stores for birds only to find them with some kind of health problem. Even same thing from breeders. Here they seem indestructible and very fertile.

I once went to a pet market in Seoul and was amazed! The variety, the prices, the crammed quarters and rough atmosphere made it an unforgettable experience!
I dream to go to Thailand one day, it's on my bucket list......
one day, one day.

I believe there was a project before trying to make crested diamond doves. I'll have to ask some others about it. Crests in pigeons and ringnecked doves are both recessive. So mate one of her sons back to her and you should get some more crested birds.

Great thanks. I caught up my bird today and had a good look. The crest if perfect shape and formed from the feathers. The skull under the crest if normal and there is no lumps of injuries.

I am going to breed her son back to her if I can get them to breed.

yes please do breed that mutation . It is beautiful and reminds me of the larger crested pigeon species. Sell some of the young to a large bird breeder in the area and keep producing them yourself . Far too often the odd mutations get lost because the owners don't recognize the importance of distributing the genetics and the mutation doesn't get perpetuated or refined. he black faced budgie is a perfect example and the crested budgie is on it's way out at least in America because the young are not being distributed except to breeders and more and more breeders are getting out of breeding them. They don't do well on the show bench and the breeders ask way to much for them to generate any interest .
I have been trying to obtain a couple of pairs of crested budgies but have been completely unsuccessful fr 5 yrs now. Please don't let this beautiful mutation get lost.

Update.

My pair of diamond doves finally have some chicks!!! I am so excited. The hen had several single eggs and did not incubate them very well, some broke, others did not hatch. But then she had 2 eggs and make a big nest. A few days ago they both hatched and mum and dad are taking great care of the chicks. I hope one will have a crest! If not I will breed her offspring to the parents and see what happens. My female still has her crest and still looks very beautiful.

I also finally found a pair of natural 'normal' coloured Gouldian Finches today!!!! YES!!!! They seem quite tame and settled in very quickly. Hope to start breeding them too! Bird keeping is so much fun.......and very addictive.........even my chicken flock as more than doubled!
