Oz, I'm starting to wonder why I trusted this guy and what else he's been hiding from us. The moment I told him we're going back he's stories changed completely. From "all is well on the farm" he went to negativity. It sounds like things went from bad to worse since we left.

He actually said to me, about Heide, "We didn't know you were coming back" So it makes it o.k. that he can break a promise, just because we're not there to catch him out! With friends like those, who needs enemies? Well, needless to say we're not friends any more. And it's sad. I liked them and trusted them enough to leave my boy with them. And trust him to keep an eye on our farm and on MIL. I wonder what's waiting for us there.

All I can say is sorry for what happened. What I have learned in the past, is never give anything to anybody unless they can do with it what they want. If they can't then they shouldn't have it. Know what I mean.

Good morning everyone

So... I took the 5 chicks that hatched yesterday out of the bator. The other two eggs had no pips yet. I figured I would leave them alone until tomorrow, then maybe candle and float test, mostly because I have duck eggs due to go into the hatcher on lockdown tomorrow, so I want to know if the chicken eggs are going to hatch or not... I decided to candle a few turkey eggs that are on day 14, and when I was closing the cover of the bator, one of the duck eggs in the turner caught my eye... It was pipped!!! They aren't even supposed to go into lockdown until tomorrow! And my hatcher is a mess from the 5 chicks that hatched yesterday...

So that set off a flurry of panicked activity from me... I candled the 2 remaining eggs... No movement in one, the other is dark like a maran egg (was one of 10 shipped to me as "rainbow layers", so no clue on the breed), and I never could see a darn thing in that egg... Float test was negative on both eggs, so I carefully opened them. The dark egg had never even developed and the other one looked like it quit right after lockdown. Then I did a quick emergency cleaning of the hatcher (my still air Hovabator), and went to move the duck egg... 3 of the 4 have pipped!!! Oh my goodness! They aren't even supposed to go into lockdown until tomorrow!!

Oh well... They are all tucked away safely in lockdown in the hatcher now, with my webcam watching them so I can keep tabs from home... Come on baby duckies!! My first duck hatch! I'm way too excited...

Oh yeah, then my daughter and I ran to our local feed store to get a small bag of chick starter since I forgot to bring some from home. They had a new shipment of bantam chicks... Too cute!! I had just told a friend that I would probably never buy from the feed store again, since I really enjoy hatching my own and can get some nice eggs from the swaps here... I walked out of the store with a small bag of chick starter, two Japanese Bantam chicks, two Mille Fleur Bantam chicks, and two White Cochin bantam chicks... Doh!!! I have a problem....

wow early duckies!! your temps a tad high? sounds like you have a plan!
busy brooder
yay Congrats Chicks!
I am glad I didn't touch the incubator temp. It went back up to 102*, then 30 minutes after I saw, it went back to 100*. I feel safe with these temps. I won't be touching anything. I may cover the bator with a towel to see if that helps the temp, though.
what in the world..... is it your thermometer? I have one that skips a number.

Quote: That is excellent advice. You really can't expect people to care about things you care about. Lesson learned. I should've know better, but the problem is I want to believe people are good and honest and trustworthy. At least to some extend.

Well, one good thing that came from all this is that I'm now discovering who my real friends are.

There being shipped today. Only from GA. So very close. He said they were layed Saturday and Sunday. But can't put them in the Bator till Friday or Saturday. Because of the hatch going on now. These hopefully will hatch early like they did last time.

I read and re-read 101 on shipped eggs. So they will have time to settle before going in. Because of my currant hatch. lol.

Wife said I could get more GLW but I seen these and there the Dan Powell line. So had to get them.

Lesson's are hard learned sometimes. Just life.

Having a very slow hatch. I have life in every egg I candle. I have had two more chicks just hatch. Today is day 21 and 22. I like the 20 day hatch a lot better than this one.
I hear ya on that one! I hope I run into an update soon as I am reading!
Quote: How many have hatched from that bator and were they banty? sorry I cant rememeber!

I put eggs in marked 5th so I need to see when my next one is too! OHHH tomorrow but they are banty so I may do so tonight if I see any internals! crud hatcher isn't on!
Just made it to MT home in FL and was a little worked when I saw the temp was reading low. However, I've been home 30 minutes and hear peeping from the eggs so some are internally pipped. Going to bed and took one last check and see that one has externally pipped as well. Hope to have a chick or two in the am!!!!

Morning all. Got woken up early by my phone and to add insult to injury it was bad news. Heide died more than a month ago

That's what I got for paying and trusting our "friends" to take care of my chicken. Lesson learned.

maybe your friend told a white lie to delay telling the truth

either way, sorry
I am sorry to say I agree, what a sad story
