Actually the roo in my pic is one of the ones that was lost. Those lil babies hatching at Sally's house are his kids.

HI! I'm sorry about the dog attack. That's a wicked thing that I wouldn't wish on anyone! I lost 4/5 roos and the rest hens. 15 of 29 taken out before I got the dog. Triedd to save the BCM roo and he didn't make it.

Completely understand where your at with that. My PA BYC family all reached out and have been helping me get my flock back up. Why? Cuz they are AWSOME!

Is it just this time of year that dogs like go crazy or what? also hearing a lot of hawks getting chickens and I lost a small pullet to a young owl a couple weeks ago. Just a mixed breed for eggs, but with the dog attack it would have been nice to have had her. So cool when everyone helps each other out! So sorry to hear of your loss, especially the BCM. Decent quality are very hard to come by here and the ones I"ve seen listed on CL all had white feathers.... But I have eggs from Garry farms and they are hatching tonight ;-)

One thing this has taught me is to look for the weakest link, because that is where the predator is going to find it's way in!

I lost that BCM roo, my GLW roo, and a very special yellow penciled brahma roo that was in isolation because he was only here for 24hrs. The other lil roo was a SL bantam cochin. Those were my studs. The dog attacked mine in the middle of hurricane Sandy. Wind blowing rain sideways in the middle of 60mph winds. Not pleasant conditions to begin with and that was the LAST thing I expected to see when I went to check on everyone in the middle of that.

These things happen. I would have never thought in a million years I would have had an 80-100lb dog IN my pens just slaughtering my chickens.

yeah, always a shocker. Don't know which is worse, catching them in the act or coming home to it after they are long gone. Yes I do, the second is worse. cuz at least if they are still here I can usually get off a couple of shots and I'm a pretty good aim.

So sorry to hear you've lost so much. I hope you are able to recover some of your breeding lines through folks that have some of your stock. I'm just starting out with breeding so overall nothing special; but the loss of layers hurts. Also was going to hatch off some more chicks to sell to support this new addiction of mine ;-) Most folks here don't care about purebred or the SOP they just want cute chicks and pretty layers.

When it came down to it....The dog jumped at me twice. First time the GLW roo and the BCm jumped between me and the dog. They attacked when it came for me. The dog killed one maimed the other and she jumped and she didn't jump anymore.

It doesn't rain, it pours

. Do you think that dog waited for the weather to give him a cover or something?
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss.

I lost a favourite hen to a dog just over 2 years ago. I was devastated. She was a very special chicken. Luckily I had some of her kids by then, so I still had a part of her. She lived on through her kids.

:( I'm so so so sorry about the dog attack :( this summer I lost 2 two week old pekin ducklings and a 1 week old French Rouen due to a dog attack and almost my favourite hen and the only duck that lived has survived two... When I found my hen after the dog attack she was just lying on the ground practically unmoving and I could tell the dogs had gotten their mouths around her but it didn't look like he was bleeding. She had attacked the dogs to try to save the French Rouen duckling but they gt the duckling and hurt her. My parents let me carry her inside and for a while I thought she had a broken leg because all she did was sit there ok my lap traumatized for like an hour. But luckily I was able to bring her back up to health and she's here today... I hope the chickens that you saved from the attack make it too....

Umm... I also have a little question about an egg that's hatching.... The temp and humidity in my bator has been perfect for lockdown, but this chick is odd... The egg started wiggling last night around midnight and this morning I saw pip holes on it. Yeah. Did you catch that? Pip holes---- plural---- both your average external pip hole, but two of them, next to each other. And it doesn't chirp at all- it only wiggles. This is seriously confusing me. Help, anyone?
