Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

your just hatched chicks can go 1-2 days before they need food and water. The yolk they absorbed is keeping them going for that time. I wait and give everyone that has pipped a chance to hatch after everyone has pipped and hatched then look in the windows (i use my candling flashlight) and make sure none of the other eggs have pipped. If their shells are solid and the chicks are all dried then open and move the chicks to the brooder. Then candle and see if they have pipped the airsac or check for movement. Chances are really good that if everyone else has hatched and the other eggs have not progressed that they quit.
3 days and they will be fine, unless its ungodly hot. If for any reason I need to leave chicks in the bator for an extended period I give them gatorade caps of water but no food. Normally once a group is dry, out they go to the brooders.

No, shipped eggs. I am going to try again, last batch 8 cream legbars, 0% success, I only had 1 that started to develop. all air cells damaged in shipping. These are very dark so I'm not able to see into them very well. I am keeping them upright as precaution. The lightest 1 of the 3 I can tell is intact. So hopefully Santa is good to me.

I switched a week ago to the K&KMash instead of the purina layer.......and with the layer feed I could throw it in spots in the coop when I left them out in the mornings, the mash is just a waste that way, so I stopped and figured they would go into the coop to keep eating, the food has been going down but perhaps she didnt ever eat from it maybe they didnt let her? Uggg I wish I could see the weight loss better under all those fluffy feathers. I check on them again and three some mash on piles in front and they acted starved.....

I didnt even check for sure if its Sketch or Stencil, but it was one of my big beautiful Dark Brahma hens and all my chickens are April/Mays, so young! Lil Lucas climbed in and put her in the dish pan dust bath bucket that I dumped out. looks like she fell asleep and never woke up!!! I am p/od and upset, she has been a fine girl!! As much as I would love to check her out, she is frozen solid and I dont have the heart to even look in her throat for petes sakes! Now what??? uggggg

So being new to all this, I was wondering when we go into lockdown and lets say a few chicks hatch on time...how long do I give the others before opening up the bator? If I have 1 or 2 left after the rest do I assist? Because the ones that hatch will need food and water
I usually give my eggs 3 days past hatch day before i help unless I know one was rocking and rolling and seems to be having trouble then I try to help if it seems to be getting weaker and I only open the bator between pips to take out chicks ... the baby chicks can survive 1-2 days is what i was always told..without food and water .... and this seems to be true

Do they stay penned or do they get some free range time? I know my younger birds will hang around the coop when everyone else is roaming and eat then. So sorry for you.
