One of my silkie chicks was dead under the heater. It was fine a couple of hours ago, running around. I can`t see a reason. It has a clean behind. No obvious injury. It was 9 days old today, hatched at my home. Everything I am using is brand new. Is there any precautions I should take with the others?
The only thing I can think of is make sure the heat lamp isn't too close to them and they can move away from it. Only 1/4 of my brooder has the heat on it. That way they can move to there comfort zone. Very seldom do I ever see them from day one laying right underneath it. Had one chick die at 2 days old this last hatch because he rolled over under the heat lamp and fried. Take extreme caution with those heat lamps.

|I am using an electric hen, and there is loads of space for them to get away, in fact most of the time they are running around the brooder. I am so worried something will happen to my other chicks. I don`t know how people cope with the heartbreak of losing them.

Sorry. My manners have deserted me. Thank you.

Some times there is no reason they just die, it not because you have or haven't done something they just do. Out of 30 hatched silkes we only had 21 make it to adult birds. It's sad as you put so. Much effort in looking after them and that's the reward.. Dont blame your self ..!

Thanks Linzie. I hope the others will be ok. I only have 5 now, and one of those has splay legs and wry neck. I can`t feed itself or walk.Of all of them, that is the one I expect to die.

Wow so much loss I'm sorry to everyone! Sally I hope your stress level comes down and I'm sure it will all work out like its supposed to! :) my recent Araucana shipped eggs are kind of a bust 4 of 10 seem to be doing something and with my luck they will all have the lethal tufting gene and die in the shell.... Hoping for a cpl! Sick of rain we had at least one nice day! Ugh!

ok not seen this before and need advice on this one egg. Its not due till thursday. It looks like it has pipped (terrible pictures but on my own so had to candle and take pic at same time!)

But then the other end looks like this

There is movement.
if there is movement is should be ok, I don't see a pip? could you see its beak moving in there?

they are willing to work with me because those are simply guidelines. Wonder if they tell that to the inspector???? lol I don't think this will happen sumi

My vet is calling the state lab this morning when they get in. She is going to find out all the information she can get and see if they have any more recommendations.

I had called and left a message and she called me right back this morning.
I am wondering why she didn't have you sacrifice a chick and send it for testing??? you have lost so many Doug I am so sorry!

I agree Ms Steak, sometimes they show no reasons, she could have gotten a pc of shavings stuck in her throat or something, sometimes stuff just happens. Sometimes they have issues inside that we never get to see. soo sorry
