I don't know if its because perhaps the eggs have started to generate some of their own heat or what... but all day today I have had the hardest time maintaining temperature. Only slept for 2 hours (sick 2 year old) and the temp was good when I went to bed. 2 hours later it was 102 :( I adjusted it the same amount I've found to work for these tiny adjustments, opened the lid briefly to let a little excess heat out. Checked again and it was on the money. Then all day long it was bouncing between 98 and then 102. The tiniest adjustment either way was too much :( Its only day 6 for batch 1 and day 3 for batch 2. Can there really be that much more heat already?
I hope she feels better!!! No its not the eggs with the heat. that doesn't happen until later on. strange

what a day. so glad it is almost over. Neighbor's dog nearly had a chick dinner and dh nearly bagged the neighbor's dog. If it comes sniffing around again it is going to be drug back to the neighbor with a bullet in its head. Yep. that kinda day.
oh Chicks! did you go talk to the owners of the dog?

Quote: Curiosity...... why I say that is because no matter how gentle we are placing the light on the top, we just HAVE to turn that egg and look for that embryo, and when its an already injured egg we treat it even worse, "testing" that air cell just so we can SEE if its better or not. I find its best to let them go, I have never had an egg explode before day 10 EVER! actually I should say I never had an egg explode! If your candling and can see in the eggs you should be fine, its those dark eggs that we cant really check, so sniff sniff! And if they are bad by day 14-18 you can smell them!

I don't ever check air cells. I don't want to make it any worse. I have found sometimes I get shipped eggs were it looks like wet coming from egg pores. Almost always those eggs are scrambled and do not develop or if it does develop, it dies early on. I'm going to be better about not candling . . . I promise!!!! :)

Well. I bought 4 chicken tractors or pens from a guy yesterday and he is going to deliver them. They are bigger than normal and one is roofed with cedar shake and one is made out of cedar. He built them all himself. Im going to paint a couple of them to make them match my barn. I will have places for all my chicks and for three different breeds. Then I will let my Buff Orpingtons have the run of the place. I have more of them than anything.

I have 5 goats now. I just finished putting up over 1000' of fence and they have a few acres of Bermuda grass. The great thing about goats is they prefer the weeds. LOL. They have been attacking my weeds all evening. We are freezing milk and have a couple gallons already. We are living healthy and trying to get away from hormone based foods. We will never have to buy any more milk.

O yea. I had 8 eggs and 7 hatched as of the last time I looked this morning.

What else. IM WORE OUT!!!

Can't wait to see the tractors/pens!!!! We'll all be expecting goat milk products (soaps, lotions, etc.) for Christmas, Doug!!!! ;)

Since you said one of my eggs looks fertile, I threw a couple in the bator to see what if anything develops!!!!

Dh handled it. Problem is the guy had 2 of his dogs shot this spring when they chased down a new filly and tried to eat it. Both dogs and the filly died. It was his horse as well. So really sucked for him. His last dog went missing around july4th and all the neighbors were happy to see all the dogs gone. Did he learn his lesson? New dog same story. Sucks for the dog as it deserves a chance but I am not going to test it with my chicks.

Day 16 candling on my EE and SLW eggs

Started with 11 SLW eggs and now have 6 still developing

Started with 13 EE eggs and now have 8
developing

These were the eggs that came from CA to here in FL. The air cells are the wonkiest air cells I've ever had. Literally up at normal level then down half inch then back up and down three quarters inch then back up. I hope they can turn and make it out. I will be watching closely!

So I need to wait to up humidity until first internal pip, right? That might not be until late day 19 or early day 20? And should I try to lower temp a bit? I've got a still air LG. What's the consensus?

First chick is out! It's s basque! So cute! Tomorrow is day 21. And I am not opening the incubator till they are all out and dry!!! And thanks for the tip of using those cloth chamois (sp) to raise humidity. Worked like a charm! Holding steady at 80%. Also got the big nest box installed today. It is an antique metal one with 10 nests in it. Putt up new perches and extended the run today as well. Also weeded my jungle of a garden. I am tired! Little one has strep ( she got it from me, I came home from vacation with it. Yuk!) she is finally in bed so I think I Am heading to bed as well!
