Quote: Sumi did u ever do this? I read so much on this stuff and most times people get it messed up with the amounts of the concoction, and it doesn't "put them to sleep" as fast some suggest. For some that cant do the deed the quick way I would say this is worth a try though. I think most of us do it the quick over and done way.

EVERYONE.... whats your method?

Well dang. I moved chicks and chickens all over the place yesterday. I had chicks outside in a cage under the barn roof. I moved them to a small chicken house with a coop around it so they could get out and enjoy themselves more. This morning I went out and the silly things had stayed in the rain all night. (fully feathered bigger chicks) 3 were dead and several others were near death. I didn't have time to mess with them so I threw all of them into the chicken house and had to leave. I will see how many died when I get home tonight. Jeez. Get out of the rain. They had plenty of room in the house.

No, haven't culled a chick since I learned about this. The OP in the thread gave some details about the amount she used etc. DH "takes care" of the chicks for me if needed. I only did it once and it didn't go so well, so I refuse to do it again.

Does he get mad at you because he has to do it? That's why I do it now, DH said I was a pain and told me "what makes you think I like doing it more than you?" made me think he did, I want to do this stuff so I guess I need to do the bad stuff too. Nothing good about that part at all. Had to put one down with this last hatch, her entire belly was big and light green poo spilled from her in bulk, she was so bad the poor mite. You know when it needs done, so sad.

could it be location in the bator? Age of eggs? interesting
No

We rotate the eggs in the bator. It also has great circulation and I tested the temps at all 12 location as tray could sit.

They pipped on day 24. Normally hatch on day 28.

Last batch hatched on day 27 and I dopped my temps by a degree since.

I guess they are just an anomaly.

Oz where did you get your foam? so far I haven't packaged and had anyone say they had broken or issues packed in bubble wrap and more bubbles, then the outer box I simply use egg cartons on the bottom and sides to hold that inner box in place. I use the 12x12x8 usps outer box and then the smaller 8x8 box (think) for the eggs. anything over 12" you can basically double shipping costs! Are the eggs usually that loose in the foam? or is it the image
I get it from texaspoulty.com

Its not cheap and if I was not re-using it I would think about it.

The best method I have seen from a seller is pipe insulation. A piece of one inch x 6 feet is only 2 bucks. it will do about 16 eggs with cushion room above and below.

there is a box slightly smaller than the 12x12 that fits into it diagonally - a regional box. you can fit a doz eggs in that box.

When I get more than about 15 eggs in a 12x12 I get breakages - the nongs double stack with just bubble wrap. then you get egg vs egg injuries.

With the foam, I can get 72 eggs in the 12x12. 4 boxes to a golf bag = 294 eggs. More than that I use a TV box as well. The TV box gets a manual inspection because the airline is scared that a TV may break on the conveyer system. The golf bag and TV box get manually delivered to the plane.

I would never ship USPS 72 eggs to a box. that way.

I have also put eggs in a suitcase and just let them ride the conveyer and go through xray. I figure that if the xray dose given for a human abdominal xray wont cause increased miscarriage or deformities during the first 2 weeks when cell division is rapid, the much lower dose used in luggage screening really wont hurt eggs. There is a very small amount of literature that supports this. I have had no variance in my hatch rates on these x-rayed eggs.

Quote: It could be the age of the hen laying the eggs and the amount of yolk content and size of albumen. I remember reading an abstract that went into details of the age of the hen and all the stuff associated with the embryo. I have no clue where to find it though : (

I am going to leg band them a different color to the others and I will see if it is a genetic phenomenon.

Oh no, so sorry!
