Sorry it took so long to reply was in emergency room all day with my 16 yr old son he almost lost two fingers still could if bone infection sets in.
It's a 250 wt bulb same one I used with last chicks also same tote and I don't smell any gas or burning plastic so no idea

Holy cow!!! I hope he's ok!!

So it looks like I have one of each so far. One of the BCM chicks, and one quail hatched. I don't know what's up with the color of the Black Copper Marans though.... I looked it up and can't find any yellow BCM chicks.

hi

that bulb is too hot

i use a 40 watt bulb in a tote with room temps of 70F

250 watt bulbs should be reserved for warming a coop in the dead of winter.

Good luck with your son. I hope he is on a cephlasporin antibiotic if there is a risk of bone infection

He is and it's the same bulb I used with the last bunch and didn't lose one of those the thermomitor says 95 in the bator and there is a section that is not in the heat/ light so now I'm really confused

when i have someone showing up here looking at chicks i will go out and stir them up about 10 mins before the people get here, if i dont they always think they are dead.

Opinions please....I am at the very end of day 21 with this hatch. In the bator were:

3 of my mutts
9 shipped Welsummer eggs

One of my mutts pipped yesterday around 9pm and 2 more this morning. #1 pip made no progress so I just checked and confirmed it hit a vein and bled out internally :( #2 and #3 mutts pipped early this morning and started to zip this afternoon and have done nothing since - membranes starting to look dry.

Meanwhile I candled 3 of the Welsummers and suspected they were dead. I drilled a tiny peep hole and confirmed one stopped developing early, one died probably around day 18 and both had chalk white internal membranes. The 3rd one is alive, had internally pipped toward the center of the egg and the membrane also looked chalk white in the center with only the edges still looking moist - looks somewhat shrink wrapped. I applied coconut oil to the membrane and confirmed it still needs to absorb blood etc. So its back in the bator to party on...

Now - dilemma - Most of these air cells are WAY funky and were detached when they arrived. I suspect 3 were dead on lockdown but are too dark to tell for sure. I am afraid that if there are any alive in there they might be int the same malpositioning predicament as this one and might make it if I drill a hole like oz does.

What would YOU do?
