He seems to be nibbling at his own egg? And I remember reading something about not feeding them at first.. or waiting 24 hours to feed because they still have the yolk they absorbed filling thing.. But, I didn't find anything about water. I don't want to unnecessarily open the bater again if I shouldn't/don't need to.. at least until he is completely dried off. But, the little tyke is opening and closing his mouth, it's not too hot in there.. but it can't get to the water beneath the grate to drink if he wanted to. Is pecking at its own egg normal, or the inside of it?

Yes he is normal. Mostly just exploring. They don't have hands to touch so they use their bill/beak. They can go a couple days on the yolk. Take him out in the morning and put him in the brooder with food and water. You might gently dip his bill in the water not all the way but just get it wet. He will figure the rest out.

A hygrometer is a must for hatching. Too low of a humidity caused your stuck baby. Always have a good calibrated thermometer and a hygrometer. Try again.

2 things - 1 (probably already know this but don't want you to have more bad luck so saying it anyway) make sure you put rocks or something in the waterer so that she can't drown in it. 2 Would you describe the chick as "gasping". If so, from my experience this is not a good sign :( All mine that did this have passed. Make sure if it IS doing this you do NOT try to give it water as it will drown by sucking the water into its lungs.

I have everything crossed for you that this little one is perfectly healthy and does GREAT!! :fl :fl :fl :fl :fl :fl :fl :fl :fl

It is a duckling so little different than a chick.

Today is the day to fire the incubator back up. It hit me too late to do it but next batch of eggs I collect I plan to place them in the egg turner to see if I get a better hatch rate. right now I just put them on the counter in a egg box and tilt it side to side once a day.

When saving eggs I try to tilt the carton a couple times a day.

Hatch day happening here. I locked down yesterday, first external pip last night, 4 out of 11 are out. These are eggs that just piled up in my 90 degree garage for a week and since I didn't want to waste them I put them in the bator. Not the best way to store eggs. They don't seem to mind it too much.
