Do you have pics of your turkens by chance? I would love to see how you have everything set up with that many breeds. I take it you have a huge property. I always wanted a farm, I guess I should have married one eh? oh well

Also what do you raise the pharoahs for? meat? are they also dark meat?

Is there any breed of fowl that is small with white meat that grows fast and eats little like quail? We really didnt like the cots we processed. I forget if you ever told me if you have a website?
i was afraid you would ask me about the quail LOL. i bought a few and just started breeding and hatching with intent on having some to eat. i have always sold anything i can raise to 2 weeks old and have never eaten the first quail or egg. ozexpat probably knows way more about them than i do. pharaoh and coturnix are the same thing.

this is an older picture of the turkeys from mid summer. the bronze are all toms and will become thanksgiving dinner.

our current farm is 7 acres but we only work off of about 1 acre. the rest is hillside crawling with raccoon, mink, coyote, possum, and squirrels. the farm we are moving to is only 4.5 acres but its all flat, has 2 water taps, 2 electric services, 2 septic systems, and a well. our farm has outgrown the usable property here.

have you ever thought of raising cornish x for "cornish hens"? its not all white meat but i find them rather tasty. i dont know of any all white meat birds.

as far as having this many chickens, it becomes a lot of work. i love doing it, but its hard to spend individual time with them like those people who only have 30 or so in a backyard flock. i really dont know how much money we have spent obtaining our flock, building housing, and buying equipment. i did put some "budget information" in the year 5 area on my member page. after buying the new farm, we are going to struggle most of this winter to keep things going; especially with the move. i have started working a regular job again to help us through. feeding around 650ish chickens, 8 dogs, the turkeys, 4 daughters, the granddaughter, the son in law, and ourselves gets really expensive - but we do have alot of eggs and chicken meat LOL.

Loveourbirds, do you use any vaccines?
no, but i do promote vaccine use- especially if you plan on showing your chickens. most of us originally got into chickens for self sufficiency, it only makes since to have a disease resistant flock.

the reason i dont vaccinate, is some vaccinated chickens become carriers; some "carried" illness could be passed into offspring.

(i know you already know that, i just try to be thorough for everyone else)

x2, I'd love to see pictures of your set up.

I can't imagine housing that many breeds and varieties separately.

Which vaccines would you recommend for a person who is showing?

I haven't ever shown birds before and I probably won't for quite a while, but I'd like to start showing sometime in the future.

i would vaccinate for anything i could get a vaccination for. at a show there can be thousands of chickens that are potentially carrying any illness a chicken can have.

a good "show quality" trio of heritage chickens can cost upwards of $150.00; rare breeds that are show quality can be in the thousands of dollars. if you have put forward the money to get the best of the best (i think i remember you saying you did) i wouldnt risk losing the money because i didnt vaccinate for something.

i haven't talked about this much lately, but i am still hoping to import brussbars. i will probably have them vaccinated during quarantine, but i will also have well over $10,000 in 6 chickens; and i cant just go down the road and find another breeder. in fact, last i heard there is less than 20 known "true brussbars" in the world. the brown sussex used in creating them is almost as rare, and pretty much non existent here in the U.S. some people have bred red sussex to the brown color, but its not the right genetics to recreate them. (ok im rambling)

the pictures aren't great, but most of my setup is in the pictures in the "from chicken hobby to chicken business in 4 years" link in my signature. however, im going to set things up differently on the new farm.

Sorry for irritating you Oz, seems that you and I just don't communicate well and since we're both professionals, I sincerely regret any emnity (how do you spell that word?) between us. I really wasn't trying to antagonize you while you were worrying about the hurricane and your family and all. I just really get excited when people start making medical supply lists.
i guess i must have annoyed you but honestly i feel no animosity towards you. i was just trying to be as clear as i could be to people who may read the comments with lesser understanding. it may come off condacending, sorry

i like to read your opinions and gain knowledge from not only you but others here. sometimes that can only be gleaned through debate and discussion.

Seeing others' list is great. I am a great list maker lol

Cheers

And as far as family goes, they are great. No probs. I did get a text that 2 6 week old chicks are dead without visible symptoms just now. I isolated the batch and started them on di-methox for 3 days.

Oz been worried about you with the typhoon - everything OK?
its hard to believe that just 150 miles from my home in the Philippines there are more than ten thousand dead from that devastating storm. we were basically unscathed

it had the force of a type 3 tornado but instead of being 1 mile across it was 300

the storm surge was like a tsunami, many stories high

how could a country with such limited resources prepare for such calamity
