Woke up to winter this morning, close to an inch of snow and it is still falling a bit. Way to early still have to enclose bantam runs with plastic, but now it is full of snow and another is ripped in half. Supposed to warm up again this week but I think its going to rain. YEAH!!!!!!

I am soooo not ready!

Have worked with Amphotericin B IV in Human patients. Has potential for some pretty nasty side effects. Patients tolerate Ambisome IV better. Do chickens have side effects that outweigh the benefit? Is nebulized Ampho less caustic than IV??? It is expensive too. Thoughts???? LMS
I don't think that the side effects are as bad for chickens because they metabolize so much more quickly, but it is very rough on kidney function (I believe its kidneys) and if there is any underlying damage that you don't know about.....pffft! It is also extremely expensive, that's why I was hoping to be steered toward the nystatin which is so much more obtainable. Gentamycin is extremely dangerous to give chickens IM or IV, it is so rough on kidney tissues, another reason that I have the nebulizer, you can give a lower dose and it goes straight to the organs in need, plus it isn't so good about being absorbed through the GI tract.

I just had a serious outbreak of spirochetes, they caused upper upper respiratory illness and diarrhea, ugly eggs etc. I had to put everyone on denagard for 2 weeks before I stopped seeing them in their feces long enough to feel like we had gotten rid of them. I had to treat my pond with melafix for a week. It was horrible, but that's why I recommend the denagard, its a weird kind of broad-spectrum. It kills a wide variety of not-often encountered organisms. If baytril or sulfas don't work, I use denagard, but I don't use any of them unless I feel like death is the only alternative.
