one thing i was thinking of is that you might want to think about your brooder setup for when you do have chicks hatch. I have been having a lot of trouble maintaining a good temp in my brooder and i wish i had got it up and running sooner to work out the kinks.
Wonder why you cant maintain a temp? That I have never had issues with, but I never fussed over it too much, lol.... OMG did I just say that!!! LOL

Anyway....I have it all ready from this spring, I cleaned it and set it back up right away. I decided to clean clean clean today to get my mind off all the stuff going on here... The puppies coming has me even more frazzled, phone calls for puppies, phone calls for babysitting, have a hen we did bumblefoot surgery on, uggggg oh and we were at the vet for Xrays for a pup count and couldnt get one... too much poo, wish they would have told me to hold the food for a bit first!!! She goes back monday for another for free. I am researching birthing and birthing problems and such... I should start to get her "nesting" area lol ready too, but I cant seem to find a kiddie pool or play yard gate system, so I keep searching Craigslist too! Can you tell I am a stay at home mom? I talk too much!!

DOOMED before I started! Lovely day up the mountain! OMG to wake up to one set of squealing and another and then bangs, and more bangs. I HATE feeling so helpless! Huge tree across road out at driveway thank God those cars could get under one side and no major crash! No electric and I have NO idea how long it was out, I didnt wake until squealing tires....no storms either, wet ground perhaps, but go figure!

BACKUP PLAN lol yea ok... thats ok if u wake up! temp was down to 90 in bator put generator on and back up to 100 within 15minutes w/o touching anything, so I think those ROCKS were the best forthought! internal temp must have been holding!

NOTES: No Matter how prepared you are, you really arent! Purchase water weazel to keep track of internal temp. Postponing am turn a few hours. ROCKS GREAT IDEA!

They dont stink yet!!

If this helps, in all of my (failed) attempts to hatch eggs, I've never had one go so bad in the incubator that it exploded or smelled enough for me to notice, so I don't think you have to worry quite as much as you are about an egg ruining the others. At least if it smells bad, you'll know to remove it, but I'd definitely wait to open the incubator again until you candle at 18 days.

I hope you get some chicks out of this, but don't give up if you don't. Just buy from someone closer to you, and maybe ask the seller to put "non-machineable" on the box, as well as line the inner part with tin foil, and try not putting "hatching eggs" on the box, just "fragile" and "this end up". I like it when the sellers don't use bubble wrap all the way around the eggs, instead, padding well with something breathable. You can't stop someone from shaking the box, but you might get a package that hasn't been treated roughly the whole trip.

Good luck!
