Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

so sad! this is a big issue with saddle, the chick has no room to turn, you need to do your best to judge these chicks and if you want to intervien, you better understand chick anatomy. I have alot of stuff in the 101 article as well as the assist article, links to study anatomy and such. You can save them with assistance. I have about 10 CCL that I had shipped that also have this issue and I am not sure how it will go with hatching the end of the week :( only think you can do is be prepared and watch them. Use the good eggs as a guide for the bad, thats why its always good to add local eggs into the mix as well.

Too late now, and I was away the day they were due. They didn't turn nor absorb the yolk sack, so, I'm not sure I would have been much help. Plus, it seems to me that helped chicks are always so much weaker than ones that hatch themselves!

what up with those 6

all formed but never hatched. Whenever they start hatching if they dont hatch at the same time the ones left never do hatch. I don't know why.

Just an FYI...
My hughsnet has been sporadic of late, not sure what the problem is, but I do know I am paying a fortune for something thats not being provided!

Today was day 17 of 63 of the 70 eggs set for the Easter HAL,

I candled and moved them all into a coolerbator for hatching because I needed to set for orders in the cabinet.

My pulls were the 6 CCLxPolish still not fertile, and one brahma bloodring pulled at some point. I am very happy that all the brahma were fertile and going strong, praying the fermented feed is doing its deed in helping with a healthy flock!)

Remaining in the cabinet cooler are my HRIR eggs, some Ducks

And all these (TEAL) coloring.... went into the cabinet coolerbator after the others went out..... and its almost two full trays, note my serama rig lol

YES I DO HAVE TWO COOLERS JUST WAITING FOR ME TO BUILD THEM, its too nice outside to mess with them! ha ha ha

Going back to read some of this now

wow that's a lot'a eggs!! So puuuurdy!!!

after day 16 they dont need turned anymore, my reason is that I move them out of the cabinet cooler and into a reg cooler at day 17 so I dont have accidental chicks hatching in the cabinet.

So I mark day 16 air cells and put them in, BUT I DONT RAISE HUMIDITY UNLESS AIR CELL MERITS IT OOOOORRRRR UNTIL I SEE INTERNALs and drop down into position then I up it.

Okay that sounds good. I will take my turning tray out tomorrow and turn the turner off. I won't raise my humidity until I see internal pips. So to check for internals at this stage in incubating do you just hold a flashlight up to the eggs once a day (like without picking them up)? Or is there some other way to figure this out?

One other question - I read in your Hatching 101 about raising the humidity to 60-65% for hatching. Do you start lower and then add water slowly? I am worried I will add too much water and my humidity will shoot up too high... OR what do you do when the chicks start hatching and I'm assuming the humidity gets much higher? At that point is it okay?

Quote: Until you know the amount you need for each lockdown (with time at hatching) you can do as you suggest, not a big deal!
After chicks are hatching it will sometimes go into low 90's! its cool, when its that high its a good time to grab some chicks out or wipe off windows so you can watch ;)

oh that's great to know!! yay!! I can't wait!! Now I just hope that they will all hatch! I'm going to be a wreck if I'm seeing some that aren't hatching or taking a long time. I also figured out a way to set up a live stream camera so I'm gonna do that too once "action" starts... eeeeek!!

Thank you for taking the time to help me!

I need some help with understanding this one....
Development of a method to control the water evaporation of hatching eggs during incubation

ABSTRACT

Three experiments were conducted to develop methods to control the amount of water loss and to evaluate the metabolic effects of water condition in the White Leghorn breeder eggs during incubation.

I have working with a wonderful gal to help get more silky ducks hatched, she says there is a major issue with weight loss in hatching them even running dry, cooling and misting. I am feeling her pain. I so wish I would have weighed these eggs, she is sending another batch out today, these I will weigh from the start since I have a new battery for my mini scale. it seem there are issues with weight loss, so I am researching all avenues and for the life of me I cant tell what this abstract is telling me! In addition to the following, I may or may not HOLD the eggs from incubations for several days, she has marked them and none will be older than 4 days and the eggs came in a days time last time she sent a batch. So I am thinking on watching cells and perhaps setting at day 10 mark. Any thoughts suggestions are welcome. Again the current eggs are in the cabinet bator and have been run dry, I have been misting them about 5 times a day, they are growing strong, but air cells are small.

I have just read that you should NEVER mist eggs with a water that is the same as or cooler than the egg temp. the research paper said that the eggs actually draws the liquid inside and bring bacteria with it instead of the opposite, always use water a bit warmer than the egg itself but not hot. Throwing that out there for you coch as it makes sense too!

@ozexpat @cochins1088 at everyone else that may have time to read it!! Can you PLEASE put their findings from that abstract in laymans terms? I really want these to hatch : ( and do better with the next set of eggs as well.

What I want to know is,

did drilling holes into blunt end of eggs reduce weight loss?

what size and amount worked?

What effects did it have on embryo health?

I still have not run into a trial on sanding of eggs, if anyone has one please please please message me it!

Quote: Your very welcome, we have all been where you are my dear! dont forget that, we know the stress and also know that its in your best interest to read and study and relax and let the chicks do their thing. You are doing so good so far with what you have gotten! You read and understand all the major aspects! most dont take the time to do that and then come for help when we dont have anything to help them with! Same thing with assisting, most help way too soon and then want miracles from us to fix their sick chicks :( There is a point of panic throughout the ENTIRE hatch. Everytime you think to poke at a pip, smack your hand and sit down and read and watch that timeline of a silky hatching, I put it in both of those articles. You got this! You will do the best you can with what you have, thats all you can do!

This is for my notes I dont want to loose them in my bookmarks chaos:

FAQ on the Weight-Loss Method (continue) http://www.dqcleanchicken.com/WeightLossFAQ2.html

Q6.What precautions should I take if I want to reduce the weight of an egg using the drill method?
Ans:
1. be worried about bacterial infection - clean hands, wear exam gloves, clean drill bit with alcohol, etc..
2. the drill method is a drastic method and you should use it only if everything else fails. You use it to
take a -8% egg to -10%, not -10% to -13.5%. 3. use the drill method late in the incubation when you are certain
that the egg will not make it due to insufficient weight loss, say, Day 12 onwards. Using the drill too early will kill
the embryo due to vibration. The more developed the embryo, the more able to withstand the vibration.

OMG I always get sidetracked running into new info.... pasting this so I can go read it later!!

Since the chick will not draw the yolk sac into the coelom until carbon dioxide levels rise, placing the entire egg within a partially sealed plastic bag with a moistened, sterile gauze or re-sealing the eggshell with wax or Elmer’s glue may also be indicated.
