Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

Perhaps 13% is the threshold of how to get the biggest chicks or ducklings out of each egg. 16% may have good results, but the chick won't be as big had it only lost 13%?
Discuss.
Had a couple hatch last year that had bellies so big they could not walk and someone in the peafowl group suggested it was because the egg didn't lose enough water? This subject interests me, so please, let me here what you're thinking!

and perhaps pea eggs are to lose a different percentage than chicken and duck eggs. I would imagine that being at least a high probability?

Quote: The pea people would freak out if I suggested anything over 15% as ideal, yet they also say to incubate at no less than 45-50%, which is what I did and lost half. What are the recommended numbers for chickens, quackers, geese, muscovies?

Ok all you experienced hatchers...
My air cells were too small..... weighs too heavy a week ago so havent added water in a week not a drop....humidity reading mid 20s in there...
Check eggs today which is day 15 .....air cells still look like day 7 on EVERY egg! DID NOT WEIGH THEM.
Seems like they have only gotten smaller by 1/8-1/16th of any inch
Now WHAT? Was gong to weigh day 17. Maybe should today?

Humidity the whole hatch has been 25-37 untilthe last week and now mid 20s.
not sure what to tell you! is it that humid there? are you running dehimidifier?

most ppl would freak out right! ha ha ha

I can tell you subhanalah that chicks that come out of clean eggs, vs the big wet chicks are much more healthier, absorb everything well and are off eating and drinking without issues. the wet chicks I hatched this winter gave me pasty butt in the brooders, nasty navels and I even lost a chick in the brooder. I NEVER loose chicks in the brooder, EVER since I have started with grow gel and some crumbles in the hatcher, and then they go to pro vits and acv in the brooders. I DO NOT ferment feed for them the first week, they get dry crumbles. Another thing I do with my brooder is I dont shoot for 95 in one corner, I shoot for 100 in a corner, they come and go as they please without issues, I also place the water the first two days near the light because thats where they are hanging out. Its worked well for me in the brooder, with my change in chick care for sure. I am sure its a combo of the heat and feed/vits etc as well as the fact that I dont assist chicks anymore. I can only sell strong, and cannot breed a weak hatched.

I have more duck eggs on the way! Last try to see if I learned from the eggs!

I hope I know what I am doing now! I will have to go back and read through again!

yep.

And I think I have a case of angel wing in the big white

Looks like an easy fix with lower protein and more greens, wrap.. but I am so mad I went with what the purina flock raiser bag suggested until laying! ughhhh
Now I will need to search for 14-16% feed for them.

this is a good explanation on how to wrap wings if anyone ever needs to do so, good bookmark for you all.

Do chicken eggs have to be turned all the way thru the end of day 18? Or did I read somewhere they don't need much turning after day 16? I ask bc I have 2 sets of eggs in the bator w expected hatch dates 3 days apart. The first ones (shipped eggs) due to hatch are medium sized eggs which have lost more weight than I'd like. The second batch (not shipped) are larger and hanging on to more weight than id like. I have two hovabatorsa & one turner. I'd like to move the first batch a couple days early to hatcher & up the humidity while the others stay in the turner w less humidity. Any thoughts or suggestions?

you are correct, if you dont want to turn after day 16 dont, they are fine as far as all the studies showed us.
