@ozexpat you know sitting here thinking about you, and you always make me smile or snicker..... My husband brought up the old "what if we win the lottery" ...:woot The first thing I said to him is before I do anything with my money, I want to fly and go visit "Mr. & Mrs" Oz and sit and talk for hours wherever they are. He said I am nuts, I said he can stay home. Seriously I cant wait to do just that. Its not often you find someone respectable, honest, helpful, loving, smart AND T O U G H at the same time. hmmmm I think there were only three ppl in my life that fit all of the above! yes, indeed Mr. Oz you hold my respect and a piece of my heart. And the dearest Mrs. Oz also, honest, loving and she too is strong! And I would love to say I want to see your chickens the most, but in all honesty its Mrs. Oz gardens and the pigs!!! I swear I have never in my life seen such clean pigs!!! :lau
Awe shucks If I had the money I would fly you in. As far as the pigs go, they get their poop scooped three times a day and get hosted down. It keeps the smell easy down, flies abated and pigs cool. We have a few trailer loads of saw dust. Any pig poop goes to a compost area and covered with sawdust. Please come on over. We will talk for days

OK, here is the proof. I have to learn how to do this picture thing. My son had to help me. I am showing one of each variety. I think the gray/ lavender is the splash orpington, the gray is the blue and the black is black. Only one I am sure of is the SS in front is brown. Jump in anyone if I have it wrong. I am hoping for some really pretty birds. My friend built a coop in the country and I am going to try this for a year. Lynn Marie

If birds are free ranging, getting vegetables, and feed.....is it necessary to add all this extra stuff? I feel overwhelmed sometimes. I just want to be a simple chicken farmer, or as my husband calls me "Crazy chicken lady." Hey, also whoever spoke of regular feed and adding calcium/oyster shell separately... thanks. I wondered how to keep the roos from getting all that stuff they don't need. Lynn Marie (scooter16)

It is absolutely not necessary to add all the extra stuff if your birds a free ranging as well as have access to quality feed.

Thats tantamount to giving your kids six servings of fruit and veggies, lots of protein an a few glasses of milk - then going out and spending money on vitamin chews - a complete waste of money time and effort.

If your birds have the diet you mention. only consider additives if they have symptoms of malnutrition.

The free calcium is the only exception.
