When I was a 16 year old kid I had a former racing greyhound named Suzie. Suzie retired because she hit a running rail and damaged her leg.

After months of rehab, thousands in surgeries, She was doing fine and a happy retiree.

One day, while walking towards her run to take her for a walk, she was jumping up and down in excitement when that leg snapped clean in half, bone hanging out. I had to shoot her.

That whole experience hardened me. I have never felt as much love for an animal since. I came close with Mrs Oz and my wife's first dog. I had to prematurely put him down as well.

Now I am a tough old mongrel who wont get caught again.

Even so, Sally, I can empathize with you. I hope your God gives you the courage to carry on. You are an inspiration to us all.

I set him in the coop with the others to snuggle for the night, I will pull him when I open up and see if I can get him to drink or eat, usually thats a good sign of how things will go from my experience with other animals too. I know what will need done. BUT if he eats and drinks I will check him out better but I have know clue what to do anyways so I will double check for breaks again and if I dont find anything just keep nursing him and see what happens. If it wasnt Halo it wouldnt be such a big deal. Of all the chickens I have

thats a great plan. It may not be as bad as you think and he may recover just fine. Given the will for that little bugger to be born, he has more fight in him than most

I am going to use my extra bales of straw for those straw bale gardens, anyone ever do this? can I use my chicken poo instead of cow manure or is it too strong? It says to lay the bale add a bag of manure water soak for two weeks and then plant!
Ok do tell !!.you plant the seeds or plants into the bale ?or is the plot surrounded with bales?Gotta try this!
Was just thiinking how high food is now and i need a garden but who to dig.? Last one i dug was 3 feet long and 2 ft wide thats about my speed.!!..

Sally could it be dislocated?I hear they do that pretty often i have an LO like that ..my fault too caught Peepers leg in between 2 parts of the run when i moved it she coudnt walk just collapsed and would swivel it all around the wrong directions
She sat around in the coop for a few days and it healed pretty much Still weak now after months but she can do it all now run walk etc.but hard on her when Sterling jumps on her .Poor thing.

it could be but I havent a clue how to set it back???
If you cannot find any help from a chicken expert, this is my advice. Its not guaranteed Sally - only what I would do in the middle of the bush with a human that could not communicate with me.

anything you do is going to be pretty painful for halo.

palpate the thigh going up from the hock. if you feel a break you have a quick answer.

some breaks can be hidden by a bleed into the area by the bone. of you feel a hardened area, move the leg and try to feel an abnormal movement in the swollen area.

if you cannot feel anything like that, gently pull on the leg from the hock while feeling the hip joint. Move the leg in inwards, pull a little harder, then move the leg in its normal range of motion, feeling the hip joint during the manipulation.

Then let the poor guy rest and see what happens.

AGAIN - you know my limitations with chickens.
