I know what you mean, and I even have issues with how they are raised.  Most bettas are kept in small vases and jars simply because they are able to survive the conditions. Many people think it's normal for them to just lie down and do nothing.  In fact, I even heard someone say on the radio that bettas enjoy living in tiny places.  That's very untrue.  I will only keep bettas in 10 gallon heated tanks and they are always very active and friendly.

Whoa! Are conditions seriously that bad for all the fish?????? Gosh! That's terrible!!!
 
Oh, and guppies are fun too. They are very beautiful, but they reproduce like rabbits! I purchased 15 guppies for a 55 gallon tank and 6 months later, I had over 200 guppies. I never separated the babies, I simply had lots of hiding places. I sold most of them and decided that guppies weren't for me. I now focus on different varieties of koi and goldfish.

I am so sore from lugging rocks around and pulling the wagon with them in it! I am heading to the hot tub.....

I don't post here much, it is hard to keep track of all the posts. But I am thankfull for all the hard work that you do and all the edvice that you give.
