I've seen worse, trust me. I had such a messy assist with my hatch before this one, bloody gunk all over the chick and the membrane. And with "bloody" I mean blood, clots. It was so gross, but the chick was fine and that's all I care about!

Open the shell a bit more and get us a clear pic of that membrane. Wet it with a little water, so it's not shiny. (Sorry, Sally, I'm still a fan of good old water. Works for me!) You can slap ointment on it after the pic.

I enjoy it when we are on at the same time. It only really happens on weekends.

I was up at 5 this morning. I have a rooster in my apartment lol

its 827am PST.
It's 16:29 here at the moment. One day I want to pull an allnighter and keep up with you all. One day... I keep threatening to.

You asked and you shall receive....

Other info- It started it's erratic giant zip hole almost 20 hours ago. Overnight it went from beak close to the pip line to head under wing position. The Bacitracin was pretty much everywhere but I tried to add water where I could. Sorry still pretty shiny. I do think it helps keep it moister than water but it makes it look SOO wet, and probably over exemplifies the veining and wetness inside. Maybe?
It looks much more red or bloody in the pic than it really is.

i vote for turning him upside down and giving it a good shake lol - just kidding - but gosh I feel that way when dealing with stragglers and assisted hatches.

I will defer to the experts, go and run some errands and come back with 20 pages to read and hopefully pics of your drying chick

good luck

Haha! I know! If my 7 yr old nephew wasn't staring over my shoulder I might have shook it out! And I hope you are right, it needs to give me a break! Maybe this time next year I will have some Olive Eggers to send you for your flock abroad!

Oh and not sure if this info is helpful but it didn't chirp the entire time I worked on it. Just that gulping, gasping breathing thing.

It does look very bloody! And I still can't see properly. Oh, I often wish I was there with you guys so I can examine the eggs! I'm always worried I'll read the pics wrong and say the wrong thing. When you wet the membrane what did the veins look like? Were they prominent still? The membrane should be pretty clear before the chick's ready. And there should be no bleeding. After the blood and yolk has been absorbed by the chick it will need a bit longer for the navel to seal, etc. If they come out before then they sometimes pull on the "cord" and the gunk which can cause bleeding. It happened to me with this last/current hatch. If there's another viable egg in the 'bator and I need to assist I'll take at least 20 pics.

Don't worry about the gasping thing it's doing. It's probably in a odd position in the egg. You will sometimes hear a "ticking" noise also when they breathe. It really worried me at first! But it's normal.

OK maybe here is a better pic. I think I am just going to keep waiting since the breathing thing is normal.

The flashlight through the bator window seems to take the best pics. It is all looking clear aside from some tiny ones and that vein you can see on the left. It is the only one I am concerned about. But I figure if I can still see it then the yolk and cord still have work to do. I am wondering if it was suppose to even hatch at all. It is 2 days past the others. I know some people say they have had longer though. Think maybe the fact that it sat at the post office on it's side for 10 days could make the hatch so spread out?

Sorry again everyone for gunking up the thread. I guess if anyone understands pics like this it's y'all!
