If your fogging up your hydrometer might be off. If that's not the case I have heard that feminine hygiene products work well for holding water and increasing humidity

oh the many uses!!

Quote: You shouldnt do that at the later stages EVER.... see the other post in reply..... it can also actually mess up the final formations of their intestines to have the oxygen depleted at this stage as they are forming the intestines in the final 4 days.

Having a really hard time getting my humidity up... I've got all rings full and a small cup of water in the bator and humidity is still about 56% on day 20... How can I get it up more without having to open it??
I agree, is your hygro calibrated? do you have more than one? you add sponges or a shamwow, surface area will up the humidity more than depth....

ALSO NEVER close vent plugs to control humidity at the later stages of incubation! ESPECIALLY during hatch,

VENTILATION (OXYGEN)
Ventilation is VERY important during the incubation process. While the embryo is developing, oxygen enters the egg through the shell and carbon dioxide escapes. The embryo's oxygen requirement will increases during development and especially just before hatching when they begin lung functions. Unobstructed ventilation holes, both above and below the eggs, are essential for proper air exchange.

HOWEVER New Studies (Show Dr.Bramwell Discussion) have found that a slight decrease in oxygen the first 10 days (ONLY the first 10) creates a natural higher CO2 level which will naturally build in the incubator and add a little stress to young embryos which will force the embryo to survive and grow stronger, hatch earlier, hatch larger, grow stronger, grow faster and yeild more muscle mass at 6 weeks of age. PUT THE VENT PLUGS IN FOR THE FIRST 10 DAYS ONLY and then REMOVE ALL VENT PLUGS for the rest of the hatch! NOTE: When Lockdown occurs, vent openings are frequently restricted in an attempt to boost incubator humidity. Instead of helping the chick hatch, the chick is suffocated from lack of oxygen. Never decrease ventilation openings at hatching in an attempt to increase humidity. Increase humidity by other methods. If any vent adjustments are made, they should be opened more. Try adding a dampened sponge or towel to help boost humidity during lockdown.

OMG there are way too many new posts to read through. You guys have been busy!

Just a quick update from here. I ordered hatching eggs last week, 6 either RIR or Leghorn. Went and collected today's breakfast... Yep, only thing those eggies are good for. 4 of the 6 are tiny and 1 is cracked

I'm not going to bother.

Duck eggs, I've no idea what is going on in there. I'm going to candle next week sometime.
Cheater!

that last pic is funny! how old is the chick thats not standing? some take a few days to stand up strong, did you offer her electrolites?
They are all about 36 hours old this morning. There are vitamins in the water, I do that for every batch of chicks for the first five days or so minimum. Longer if pasty butts are present.

i am giving the little one time and some scrambled egg later. It had to be the only Buff Brahma I hatched and the only chick of the group I was potentially going to keep, provided its a she. There are also one for sure RIR and an EE. One looks like an Australorp cross but the other three look like RIR but we will see. I need to dbl check what the breeder had running around in that pen.

Sally- LOVE the new pic! That sun is almost too happy!

The one on the left lying down has the leg issues. It doesn't stand, just hobbles around using the entire leg like a foot. :/ Going to post it in 'injuries/illness' section to see if there is any help for it.

All 7 from above.

This one seems to be trying to figure out what the heck that skinny long thing is...

I had one that did that. It's hocks ended up red and swollen and I was very worried. I started a thread, but after 2 days, It began walking normally. Some chicks just take longer than others, how old is he?

No I don't have the holes plugged but managed to cut up some sponges and squeeze them through the holes on the Bator and now my humidity is up to 65% heard some chirping last night in the incubator and saw some eggs rocking!! How long now? Today is day 21 and no piping yet but hoping ill come home to a few pipped eggs this afternoon! Fingers crossed! I don't think I was this nervous when I gave birth to my own children!!
